North Shore girls varsity basketball midterm week gave the girls varsity basketball team only one game, a make-up of a previously cancelled game against the Rocks of East Rockaway.
The last time these two teams met, the Vikings pulled out a thrilling 48-47 victory; this one would not be as close.
Making defense a team priority, the girls stifled the East Rockaway offense. Outstanding perimeter defense was played by Justyne Passarelli, Liz Sheerin, Amanda Johansen, Elle Hoffman and Erin Sheerin as they held the guards of East Rock to a combined 15 points.
The glass was then dominated by Chloe Johnson (12 points, 15 rebounds) and Kathleen Lennon (9 points, 13 rebounds).
Offensively, a huge spark was provided by Jackie Gioia, with a career-high 10 points off the bench.
Overall, it was a complete defensive effort by the Vikings as they won 42-33, improving their conference record to 8-1 (13-1 overall) as they head into the last week of the season.
The final home games of the year will be on Friday, Feb. 6 at 4:30 p.m. against Sewanhaka and Senior Night is Monday, Feb. 9 at 6:00 p.m. against Island Trees.
