The Glen Cove Varsity Boys Basketball team got its first win Friday night against top-ranked Sewanhaka 54-53. Senior Mike Granados led the team with 17 points, by far his best performance of the season. Sophomore Devin Hayes had the best game of his career with 13 points of hard work. Senior point guard Eric Tripp led the team in assists and overall had an impressive outing. Garren Spendjian provided much needed work on the boards as he led the team with 12 rebounds in the second half. Free-throw shooting kept the game interesting as the team hit only 50 percent of their attempts.

Coach Peter Falen stated, "If we continue to play solid defense and get the ball inside to the big men, we will win ball games."

Glen Cove looks to continue its success against Carle Place Monday. Home games this week will be Wednesday and Friday at 6:30 p.m. vs. New Hyde Park and Seaford.

The theme this year for the Glen Cove Girl's Varsity Basketball team is to "Aspire Higher." They have been doing this by focusing on hard work, determination, choices and solid decisions.

During this season the team has shown resiliency, commitment, a strong work ethic and good communication. The coach said they are also working on building a family-like atmosphere in which there is an understanding of what it takes to be successful both on and off the court. This team is very special because of the way they treat each other.

The team said they started to bond as they hosted and scrimmaged a basketball program from Denmark on Dec. 5, 2008.

On Dec. 21 they spent a day in Queens, having Lunch at Gyro World, eating dessert at Cold Stone Ice Cream Factory and attending a women's college basketball game at St. John's University.

On the court, there has been a significant improvement on the offensive and defensive side of the ball since day one. Their coach said the progress is the result of commitment to hard work and to each other. They look forward to competing in league play as they continue the process of becoming the best basketball team that they can be. They invite the community to come support the team at home games.

Members of the Glen Cove Girl's Varsity Basketball team are: Nicole Alexander, Heather Artinian, Meredith Baade, Sonia Canales, Alyssa Cuyjet, Victoria Durso, Jaclyn Franklin, Megan Gardrvits, Candra McCoy, Briana Pascarelli, Catherine Perez, Stephanie Pina and Kelsea Valance.
