The last week of 2008 was a good one for the North Shore girls varsity basketball team. It started with the first conference game of the year against Hewlett. North Shore was led offensively by Chloe Johnson (21 points and 14 rebounds) and defensively by Justyne Passarelli, Amanda Johansen, Liz Sheerin and Jackie Gioia, who worked together to hold Hewlett's all-state guard to 10 points below her average. North Shore won with a 52 to 44 victory.
Up next was a non-league game against Seaford. The Vikings found themselves down 11 - 2 early in the game as they struggled with Seaford's zone. After some adjustments, however, North Shore went on a 30 - 9 run to close the half. They jumped out to a 32 - 20 halftime lead that they would not relinquish on their way to a 55 - 42 victory. It was a balanced scoring attack with 10 girls scoring. Kathleen Lennon led with 13 points and 15 rebounds. Chloe Johnson had her second triple-double of the year (18 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists).
The Lady Vikings opened 2009 with a thrilling come-from-behind victory over previously unbeaten Oyster Bay. Trailing 28 -18 at the end of the first half, the Vikings held Oyster Bay to only 14 second-half points. They forced overtime when Kathleen Lennon hit two free throws with 12 seconds left in regulation, tying the score at 42 all.
Close games are something that the Vikings have become accustomed to in the early part of the season and when the game is on the line, they show no panic. Down 48 - 46 with 20 seconds to go in overtime, the Vikings pushed the ball up-court and found Elle Hoffman open for a 3-pointer to put North Shore up 49 - 48 for the final score.
The Oyster Bay game marks the end of non-league contests for North Shore. They are now 6 and 1 and ready to begin their tough conference schedule. The next home game for the Vikings is not until the end of January as they begin a five-game road trip.
The junior varsity is currently undefeated at 6 and 0 with no games being closer than 20 points.
