The Glen Cove wrestling team had a very busy holiday break. On Dec. 20 the team invited Herricks, Kellenberg and Carle Place over for the Big Red Challenge.

On the JV team, Matteo Guadio, Evan Siegel, Nick Manzione, Jakub Micko and Bryon Wilkins are wrestling tough for the Big Red. Freshmen Nick McAdams wrestled varsity in the 152-pound weight class, scoring much needed points for Glen Cove. Aaron Sylver and Steven Suarez also scored valuable points. Kevin Nicholas, Ricky Liang, Pat Cook, Dan Belfiore and Mike Iannetta all scored victories for Glen Cove. Hector Paez, Alexey Bogdanich, Sasha Bogdanich, Kevin Gardrvits and Jamie Theodorou won all of their matches to take first place honors. This was Jamie's best day of wrestling so far. All of the wrestlers were needed as Glen Cove defeated Kellenberg by 1/2 a point for first place and Herricks by 2 points. It was truly a team victory.

To spread some holiday cheer, the team visited the Glen Cove Rehabilitation Center. Mike Iannetta, Pat Cook, Alexey Bogdanich, Sasha Bogdanich, Dan Belfiore, Hector Paez and Kevin Gardrvits put on a wrestling exhibition for the patients. Later, the boys met some of the patients and enjoyed some holiday refreshments. The wrestlers enjoyed the visit very much and look forward to doing it again in the future.

On Dec. 30th, the team hosted the 11th annual Glen Cove Holiday Tournament. Once again the tournament was a huge success as several teams from Nassau and Westchester Counties competed in some great wrestling action. Special appreciation was expressed toward Linda Perlman, all members of the Glen Cove High School Booster Club, parent volunteers, student volunteers, Chris Barry for the TV projector set up, and all of the staff members of Glen Cove High School.

The team wrestled well with 12 of the 14 wrestlers entering the tournament placing in the top six of their weight class. Rahul Nath had a win for Glen Cove. Jamie Theodorou continued to improve taking fifth place, as did Kevin Nicholas. Dan Belfiore took fourth place in a very tough weight class. Freshman Gorov Sodhi also placed fourth. Nate Booth had another solid tournament to take third place. Pat Cook, Kevin Gardrvits, Sasha Bogdanich and Alexey Bogdanich all made it to the finals to take second place. The 130-pound weight class was dominated by Glen Cove as Mike Iannetta and Hector Paez met in the finals. In a very close match, Mike pulled out a 1-point victory. Glen Cove as a team placed third out of the eight teams with only New Rochelle and Mepham placing ahead of them.

Three short days later the team made a short trip to Locust Valley for their annual tournament. The team wrestled well again, taking fourth place out of 11 teams from Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Ricky Liang continues to develop. He scored another impressive win. Gorov Sodhi also scored wins for Glen Cove. Jamie Theodorou took fourth place honors. Mike Iannetta and Dan Belfiore continued their solid performances by taking third place. Sasha Bogdanich, Pat Cook and Hector Paez made it to the finals. There they ran into some very tough wrestlers from Northport High School. They all fought hard but came up short in close matches. Kevin Gardrvits had a terrific tournament as he finished in first place with a solid victory in the finals.

As school starts again, the team gets ready for the dual match season and the qualifiers, which are less than six weeks away. Coach Kocienda said he is proud of everyone's accomplishments. Logo
