Dr. Jeffry Ordover passed away peacefully at home on Nov. 22, 2008. Born in Great Neck in 1941, Jeff attended Great Neck North High School and received his BA from Brown University. He completed his medical education at Wayne State University in 1968 before completing an internship with the Kaiser Foundation and medical residency with the University of California at San Francisco. Jeff resided in San Francisco for 15 years where he helped pilot innovative therapies for indigent communities. Tuning out and tuning in, Jeff traveled the world, crossing India and studying with his guru, visiting temples in Japan, and cycling across Germany.
In 1985, Jeff moved east to accept a fellowship in child psychiatry at Duke University and in 1986, he survived a near fatal bicycle accident, resulting in a spinal cord injury that rendered him paraplegic. With enormous courage and strength, Jeff moved to New York for rehabilitation, and afterward established private clinical practice in Great Neck and later in Sea Cliff. He was unwavering in his determination to achieve greater health and always humble in his achievement.
Jeff held a weekly meditation group in Sea Cliff and over the years, taught friends, colleagues and patients how to meditate. He was a regular speaker at the Stroke Club on Long Island, where he was unafraid to tackle difficult subjects, and was on faculty at North Shore University Hospital where he mentored general psychiatry residents. He valued people as human beings, each one of us with a story, and he committed his life to helping others transcend their pain and difficulties, to achieve inner peace.
He is survived by his sister, Judy Godin of Great Neck and two adult children, Anna and Noah Marjavi of San Francisco. In lieu of flowers, family asks that donations be sent to the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, or the Southern Poverty Law Center.
