Known as Sallie, she was born in Roslyn on Nov. 8, 1909, the oldest of three children of Stanislaw Golon and Walentyna Tucholski. Sallie Evelyn Golon Falkowski passed away on Nov. 12, 2008 at the age of 99. Sallie was the wife and business partner of Joseph William Falkowski builder-contractor, of Old Brookville. Sallie was predeceased by her husband and life partner, Joseph, who passed away in 1973. Sallie Golon met Joseph Falkowski in 1930 while both were members of St. Cecelia's Choir at St. Hyacinth's Church, Glen Cove. They met and married in St. Hyacinth Church in 1933.
Sallie is survived by her three daughters; Dorothy Gleniewicz, Marianne Finn and Joan Falkowski. Grandmother of five and great- grandmother of five. Also survived by two sons-in-law, many nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews. Sister of George Golon and the late Theresa Novinski.
Joe built Sallie's dream house "Tall Cedar" in Old Brookville in 1953 where he planted a huge vegetable, flower and special rose garden. They enjoyed hosting many outdoor barbecue dinners followed by Sallie's famous apple pie. Sallie served the Glen Head School, Town of Oyster Bay in several Parent-Teacher Association capacities. In fact she was awarded Honorary Life Membership in the New York State Congress Parent & Teacher Association. In 1944, she saw the need and organized a "Hot Lunch" School Program. She then instituted such program staffed with other PTA volunteers. In addition she served as Common School District No. 2, District Clerk, seven years. In this capacity she organized School Board Elections.
In 1948, she served as registrar, during the "Period of Registration" as established by the Selective Service System. School districts were assigned as distribution centers to dispense books of ration coupons to the community. Ration coupons were needed to purchase sugar, butter and fuel. Harry Truman was president and John Dewey was NY State Governor. Sallie was honored for her services as district clerk along with other board of trustees, who served during the tenure of Grace Evans DeKay, principal Glen Head School. This is acknowledged on a brass wall plaque at the Glen Head Elementary School, Glen Head.
Sallie served as a Polish/English interpreter to her church, community and Board of Elections. Sallie also served the Girl Scouts of America, North Nassau Council Four Towns, in several capacities. And as recently as July 18, 2004, she was honored with a 60-year membership pin and 50-year volunteer pin. Finance chairman for town 10 years, finance chairmen for town and council 14 years, treasurer for North Nassau Council eight years and board member six years. She remained for three years on the Daisy Ball fundraiser committee, which was a huge success for Girl Scouts.
Sallie took on many leadership roles in volunteer groups. She stayed active and served proudly in other community activities. Among them: Sallie worked on the Board of Elections, Old Brookville and Glen Head, Nassau County, 50 years; AWVS: American Women's Voluntary Services of New York State, since 1946; Polish National Home of Glen Cove, Board of Directors, 10 years; American Polish Council of LI. Director seven years; Polish Roman Catholic Union of America; St. Mary Queen of Poland Chapter Oyster Bay, 50-year member since organized 1935; American Red Cross Commendation of Merit Certificate 1946 and 1955; North Country Community Hospital, volunteer services during WWII; Nassau County War Council, establishment of Victory Gardens, 1943; Cerebral Palsy Auxiliary, Brookville; Salvation Army Women's Division, Nassau County; Locust Valley Senior Club, Board of Directors, three years. She was an extremely active member of these Senior groups: Locust Valley Women's Club, St. Paul's Seniors Adult Club, Brookville, NY, AARP, chapter #3407, Glen Cove.
Sallie made new friends when she moved into Fulton Commons Care Center in East Meadow. Among the caring staff Sallie quickly appreciated those who directly attended to her. They became her favorites. She cared about them as they cared for her. Sallie's family wants to thank the St. Raphael Catholic Church outreach volunteers who provided Mass and prayers at Fulton Commons and the Bishop Kellenberg Catholic High School students who visited as Extra Ordinary Ministers. These scheduled visits comforted and sustained her.
Sallie will be profoundly missed yet fondly remembered as she touched the hearts of so many people. She had an endless enthusiasm for life, an enduring dedication to family and friends. We will all miss her dearly.

Louisa Helen Reid died on Nov. 18, 2008. Wife of the late James Gordon. Mother of Janet Schultz (George Joseph) and Doris Wildt (George). Grandmother of James and Scott. Andres A. Jaques, of Glen Cove, died on Nov. 19, 2008. Son of the late Leoncio and Teresa. Brother of Angela, Miguel, Luz, Olivia and the late Sergio. Marilyn Groom, of Glen Cove, died on Nov. 22, 2008. Wife of Richard R. Mother of Richard (Kelly). Sister of Joan O'Brien and Nancy Bayne. Grandmother of Gillian and Keegan. Religious service held at the McLaughlin Kramer Megiel Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Interment Pinelawn Memorial Park.
Mavis Poole Clement died on Nov. 22, 2008 at the age of 89 at Syosset Hospital of complications of Parkinson's Disease. The longtime resident of Manhasset and Brookville was the wife of the late Karl G. Clement, mother of Ronalie Peterson and Karla Clement and grandmother of Julia Rose Herbst. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was tirelessly aided through her long Parkinson's struggle by Valentine Shek.
An avid golfer, she was nine-time women's champion of Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove and won many titles around the country over many years. She was also active at Shinnecock Hills Country Club on Long Island and the Lyford Cay Club in the Bahamas.
Early in WWII, she briefly joined a group of women aiding the war effort by flying new planes from Moncton, Nova Scotia in Canada to air bases in the United States.
