Mary Caruccio, 85, died on Aug. 25 at her home in Kernersville, NC, after a long illness. Born in Bayville, she resided in Glen Cove for over 50 years. She is survived by her five daughters, Sally Sprague, Joan Renaldo, Linda Trombley, Barbara Campbell and Mary Jo Caruccio; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral Mass was celebrated at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Holbrook. Burial Veterans National Cemetery, Calverton. Herbert A. Funke, 92 of Natick, MA, formerly of East Sandwich, MA, and Glen Head, died Aug. 26, 2008 at the Miriam Boyd Parlin Residence in Wayland. He was the husband of the late Aileen A. (Andersen) Funke who died Jan. 19, 2007. Born in New York City and raised in Long Beach, he was the son of the late Adolf and Anna (Oster) Funke.
Mr. Funke was vice president and comptroller of the AMF Inc. Bowling Products Division of Westbury, where he worked for 35 years, in addition to starting at the corporate headquarters in New York City. He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin class of 1938 with a BA degree in accounting.
Mr. Funke joined the Arthur Young accounting firm in New York in July of 1938 and was a senior accountant until WWII began. He then attended the United States Naval Officer Candidate School. He was commissioned and rose to the rank of Lieutenant j.g. while serving aboard the USS Santee in the European and Pacific Theatres. Notably, with his shipmates, he experienced the first kamikaze assault against the Allied Forces in WWII.
He raised his family in Glen Head, where he was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Retiring to East Sandwich, where he lived for over 20 years he enjoyed the natural beauty of Cape Cod, gardening, sports and above all being with his family. He shall be remembered as a kind and true gentleman to all he met, treating everyone as equals.
He is survived by three children, John H. Funke, Susan A. Funke both of Cambridge, and Claudia C Funke of New York City; one niece, Aileen Andersen Powell of Australia; and a cousin Caroline Smith of Fort Worth, TX.
A memorial service will be held on Sept 8 at 11 a.m. in the Christ Lutheran Church, 113 Union St., Natick. Burial will be private.
