Assemblyman Charles D. Lavine (D-Glen Cove) has announced that legislation he sponsored securing a real property tax exemption for Cold War veterans living in Nassau County was recently signed into law by Governor David Paterson.

Currently there are 18,000 Cold War veterans living in Nassau County who are now eligible for the property tax exemption, which will earn them a tax break beginning in the 2009-10 year.

Those eligible for the tax exemption must fill out the Cold War Veterans Exemption form and provide written evidence that they served in the United States military between Sept. 2, 1945 and Dec. 26, 2001. All applications must be sent to Nassau County Assessor's office by Dec. 31.

For more information on how to apply call Assemblyman Lavine's district office at 676-0050.
