On Saturday, Aug. 23, the Glen Cove Public Housing Authority (GCPHA) Tenant Association hosted its first-ever Night Under the Stars Carnival to grand accolades and rave reviews. The event was held in the parking lot at Kennedy Heights from 4 to 8 p.m. and the weather could not have been more agreeable, nor the guests more elated.

"Our inaugural Night Under the Stars was a fabulous success," said organizer and tenant association member L'Carole Caffery. "I think I had as much fun as any of the children!"
Mayor Ralph V. Suozzi and wife Jane enjoyed the carnival. "My wife and I had a wonderful time," he said. "I felt a great sense of community and I enjoyed talking to members of the neighborhood. Everyone had a lot of fun, especially the children. I look forward to the association's next event, which I'm sure will be just as successful."
In addition to Mayor and Ms. Suozzi, the event was attended by a large number of residents from the community, Deputy Mayor Maureen Basdavanos and husband Bill, City Council members Delia DiRiggi-Whitton and Nick DiLeo and representatives from the Glen Cove Boys and Girls Club, as well as a host of other community leaders and supporters. Children of all ages enjoyed activities that ranged from clowns and a magician to food, raffle prizes, a talent show and a dunk tank. Older children worked as volunteers and were "infused with the spirit of volunteerism," said Ms. Caffery, a message she believes it is important to convey to today's youth.
The GCPHA Tenant Association has recently become an active part of the community, hosting a successful car wash two weeks ago that added more than $200 to the association's coffers. Members are currently planning other activities to be held throughout the year. And as for the Night Under the Stars, according to Ms. Caffery, "If you missed this year's event, don't worry - you'll have another chance next year."
