Obituaries

George Zavoyna, age 89, of Tequesta, FL, and formerly of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, passed away May 13, 2008 at the Jupiter Medical Center. Born in Bridgeport, CT, he had been a resident for 30 years, coming from Glen Cove. Prior to retirement, he was the owner of Bliss Liquors in Greenpoint, Queens, and later worked for Charmer Industries in Queens. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, Santa Maria Council of Palm Beach Gardens and a decorated veteran of WWII receiving the Bronze Star.

Survivors include his daughter, Diane (Stephen) Martin of Tequesta; one son, Robert (Sally) Zavoyna of Tuscon, AZ; one brother, Michael Zavoyna of Tequesta; two granddaughters, Caitlin, Kristi; grandson, Bryan; and one great-granddaughter, Alexis; and numerous nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Palm Beach Gardens. Entombment Riverside Memorial Park. Arrangements were made by the Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, Jupiter, FL.

Rocco Lisena, of Sea Cliff, died on May 14, 2008 at age 75. He was a member of Sons of Italy Loggia 1016, Glen Cove for over 30 years. Husband of Marie G. Father of Matalena Daly (Arthur) and Anthony (Monique). Brother of Incoronata, Lucia, Giuseppe and the late Raffaele, Francesco and Filomena. Grandfather of Anthony, Kyle, Laurette, and Grace. Visiting at the Funeral Home of Dodge-Thomas, Glen Cove. Mass at the Church of St. Rocco. Entombment Holy Rood Cemetery.

Helen Evola Fetzer, of Locust Valley, died on May 16, 2008 at age 78. Wife of William E. Mother of Cecile, Kristen Lind (Rob) and William E. III (Ann). Grandmother of Brianna, Morgan, Olivia and the late Matthew. Sister of Katie Stonehill (the late Alfred), Tony (Madeline), Julie Leskienem (Jorma), Rocco (the late Moira), Philip (Norma), Theresa Catalano (the late Jack) and Larry (Betsy).

Helen was married for 54 years. She was a certified first grade teacher at Sea Cliff Elementary School, certified quilting teacher and certified quilting judge. She was a founding member and first president of the L.I. Quilting Society. She was a community volunteer at Grenville Baker Boys & Girls Club, founding member of Grenville Baker Boys & Girls Club, a Girl Scout leader and member of PTA of Locust Valley. Friend, mentor and inspiration for many. A woman of strength and outstanding courage who fought four different cancers and four different chemotherapies over a 16- year period.

Donations may be made to your favorite charity or Grenville Baker Boys & Girls Club. Service and interment conducted privately through Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove.

Warren Olsen, of Glen Cove, died on May 16, 2008. Husband of the late Hope (nee Vanneman). Father of Peter W. (Maria). Arrangements were made by the Marcus L. Bianconi Funeral Home, Glen Cove.

Robert B. McBride, formerly of Glen Cove, died on May 17, 2008 at age 43. Robert was born on July 31, 1964 at Glen Cove Community Hospital to Ruby McBride Hicks and the late Calvin McBride. He was one of three children including Calvin Clifton McBride and Lauren Beauchamp.

Robert attended Glen Cove Public Schools until he moved to Seattle, WA, with his mother and brother. He attended Mercer Island Public Schools and completed his high school education at Uniondale High School. When the family moved back to New York, Robert attended Suburban Tech in Hempstead, where he took computer classes.

He was employed at a nursing home where he kept the patients and staff members supplied with good food and snacks.

He enjoyed attending church regularly at the First Baptist church where his mother was the organist and his grandmother was a Sunday School teacher. After moving to Seattle, he was baptized at the Mount Zion Baptist Church under the pastorship of Rev. Samuel McKinney. Robert never married or had children, but he was the much loved "Uncle Bobby " to not only his nieces and nephews but anyone else who needed an uncle. When "Uncle Bobby" was on the scene, there was always plenty of laughter and good times. His unconditional love for his family and friends will always be remembered and cherished.

In 1984, Robert moved to California to live with Lauren and her husband and children. He became one of the family members in a special way and grew very close to Jasmine and Jason. He and Lauren had a special bond and he sometimes called her his second mom.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his mother Ruby M. Hicks (Frederick); a brother Calvin Clifton McBride ( Madeline); a sister Lauren Beauchamp (Rene); a step-brother Nicholas Hicks (Gabriel); nieces, Jasmine Beauchamp; Nicoll Crittenden (Derrick); nephews, Jason Beauchamp and Anthony McBride; and a host of relatives including aunts, uncles and cousins. Arrangements made by Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Visiting at the First Baptist Church of Glen Cove Saturday 9 to10 a.m. Service to begin at 10 a.m. Interment Pinelawn Memorial Park.

William Woodruff Dehn, 79, of Glenwood Landing, died on May 17, 2008. Bill Dehn was an inspirational teacher and devoted friend beloved by his many students. He established a progressive and groundbreaking art education program at South Side Senior High School in Rockville Centre that launched innumerable professional careers over a span of three decades. Bill served as a librarian and sign artist in his later years and was an active supporter of animal rights and the arts. His students were very blessed to have had his guidance, warmth and vitality in their lives. At his request, no services are to be held. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Samuel Gray Hawkins, beloved son of Nigel and Abigail Hawkins and brother of Vanessa died on May 18. 2008. Memorial service will be held Saturday, June 7 at 10 a.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 253 Glen Ave., Sea Cliff. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Manhattan School of Music, General Operating Fund in memory of Sam. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head.
