The streak stays alive. After a 14 - 0 season last spring, the North Shore high school girls track and field team won its first and probably most difficult competition on Tuesday against Valley Stream North and Carle Place. It was a tremendous competition as the three teams, all respective champions in their own right, battled from start to finish. When the dust settled and the rain stopped, North Shore stood victorious once again. The team began its season with a perfect start and will strive for another county championship. Top highlights included first place performances by sophomore Brianna Welch in the 1500 and 400, senior Debbie Gilbert in the 400 hurdles, newcomer and eighth grade sensation Samantha Nadel in the 800. This was Samantha's first race and victory as a varsity. Other personal bests were performed by senior Christie Goodman in the long jump and junior Marisa Dussel in the 3000m.

Victories continued as the team competed in the Paul Limmer Invitational at Mepham High School on Saturday. Rain was in the forecast but the sun came out and it turned into a fine day of weather and competition. Several girls received medals in their respective events: senior Debbie Gilbert in the 400m and junior Nora Gaughn in the 400m. In addition to the medallists, other excellent performances were turned in by senior Elissa Lechtenstein and junior Josephine Netch.

The Vikings opened the tennis season with a suspended match due to rain and two victories. After a rainout on Monday, the team traveled to Herricks High School to start the season. The rain held off for only an hour and the team match was suspended with most of the individual matches still in the first set. The team will complete the match on April 14 at Herricks High. On Wednesday, under much brighter skies, North Shore dominated Plainedge 7-0. Dylan Talcott, Austin Davidow and Christian Petroske used their forceful groundstrokes and only lost one game among the three of them. In doubles action, eighth graders Ricky Lobben and Tanner Korponay earned their first varsity victory at second doubles. Thursday the tennis team visited Clarke and came away with a hard fought 5-2 victory. Keith Salerno and Cole Korponay were victorious as they overcame a sluggish start to win at first doubles. At third doubles, Joey Sacco and Jordan Ziskin continued their winning ways with a straight set victory at third doubles. North Shore continues its season this upcoming week with matches against Sewanhaka, Oyster Bay and Locust Valley. The North Shore men's golf team has spent the last few weeks tuning up for this year's season. Practice schedule has included time at Glen Cove Golf Course, Harbor Links, Cantiague Park, and even an intense session of wiffle ball in the basement. The team was ready for its first match against Jericho this week at the Tam O'Shanter Country Club. The Vikings were able to win three out of the first four head-to-head matchups, including Michael Curcio's 38, the best score among both teams. But that would be all that the Vikings won on that day, narrowly losing the overall match by just two strokes. The positive from this year's first loss is that the team has showed it will be very competitive with the elite teams in Nassau County. The North Shore women's lacrosse team is off to a solid start this season with a record of 5-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The Vikings are led by senior defender Ashley Janelli and goalkeeper Maggie Drowica in the backfield. The defense has stepped up and taken control of its opponents to limit the team's goals against to 29 in five games. Freshman defender Lauren Janelli and junior Justyne Passarelli have done a tremendous job holding up the crease. The Vikings beat Suffolk County team Harborfields on Friday by eight goals with a final score of 14-6. Sophomore Kathleen Lennon scored her first goal of the season. The team continued to rally against Oceanside and MacArthur. Senior Kristin McCormack contributed four goals in two games while senior Kaela McGilloway contributed seven. Devon Comito added five for the Vikings. Senior Kristen Reynolds led the team in assists with eight in two games. Erin Tornatore, Heather Magnuson, Melissa Meehan and Ashley Janelli each contributed goals toward the Vikings' two wins. The Vikings beat Oceanside with a final score of 14-7 and MacArthur 15-3. Goalkeepers Maggie Drowica and Kristen Giovanniello saved a total of 19 shots in two games combined. The Vikings will meet Mt. Sinai on Lacrosse Day, April 12, on the football field of North Shore High School at 5:30 p.m.
