The North Shore High School boys lacrosse team went 1-1 this week to bring their overall record to 1-2 in non-league play. After a tough start with two consecutive losses against Jericho and then Calhoun, the Vikings were able to bounce back with a convincing win over Bellmore JFK to finish out the second week of the season.
Despite the outcome of the Calhoun match up, there were some bright spots for North Shore. Chris Dellavecchia had two goals and one assist and Robbie Grabher performed well at the face-off while adding a goal and three assists of his own. Glen Gerbush put in a solid performance in goal but it was not enough and the Vikings fell to the Colts 8-5.
Looking to get their season on the right track, North Shore came out strong against Bellmore JFK, netting four goals in the first and second quarters to take an 8-2 lead into the half. Dellavecchia again played his part in the scoring with four goals, but Tommy Kilderry led the Vikings with five goals and one assist. Taylor McGrath, Keith Lopez and Grabher added to the North Shore offense, as did junior Nick Cortisidis with his first varsity goal to bring the final tally to 14-8 Vikings. Shaun Brala led the defense that held Bellmore to only three goals through three quarters.
North Shore is next in action in a night game Saturday, April 5 at Plainview JFK starting at 7 p.m.
The North Shore women's lacrosse team is 2-0 with wins against Southside and Lynbrook. Ranked No. 6 in Conference 1, the Vikings opened up their season with a non-league game against Southside. Leading the team in goals for the Vikings was senior Kaela McGilloway. Kaela totaled six goals and one assist. Senior Kristin McCormack added five goals and one assist, while seniors Kristen Reynolds and Sara Micelotta totaled two goals apiece. Devon Comito scored with 10 minutes remaining in the first half to give the team a 7-2 lead. Sophomore attacker Heather Magnuson led in assists for the team with a total of five. She also contributed with one goal in the first half. Taylor Spallone solidified the win for the Vikings with her goal with 18 seconds left in the game. Goalkeeper Maggie Drowica stepped up strong in the goal with seven saves. The final score was 18-7.
The Vikings continued with their strong defense and fluid attack against Lynbrook on Tuesday. The Vikings won with a score of 17-6. Kristin McCormack led the team in goals with four while Kaela McGilloway and Kristen Reynolds each added three goals. Senior defender Ashley Janelli added her first goal of the season late in the first half. Heather Magnuson added two goals for the Vikings and Sara Micelotta, Devon Comito, Erin Tornatore and Denise Kilderry each added a goal. Maggie Drowica had nine saves while sophomore Kristen Giovanniello saved another six shots. The Vikings have a positive outlook on the upcoming 2008 season with the team's speed, defense and versatility.
After the success of last season, the Vikings have high hopes this spring. For the past month the team has been challenging one another on the court, getting used to the conditions of outdoor tennis. Gone are the warm confines of indoor tennis. With hats, gloves and lots of layers, the team is getting used to windy, cold and sunny conditions. Leading this year's team to start the season at singles are Dylan Talcott, Austin Davidow and Christian Petroske. Doubles will be led by senior Captain Keith Salerno and Cole Korponay at first doubles and Alex Bouganim and Ricky Lobben at second. To round out the doubles are the experienced team of Jordan Ziskin and Joe Sacco and newcomers Andie Ferreira and Tanner Korponay.
