Joseph A. Mastroianni, Past District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler, 50- year fraternal organization leader, died suddenly on March 7, 2008 at age 81.

He was a 50-year member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and a heavy construction labor foreman for over 40 years. "He was completely immersed in the brotherhood that lodge membership offered. Chairing countless committees, he helped to make a better community. He made many friends working his way through the ranks of the Elks." said his son "Bud." Joe's first term as exalted ruler of Glen Cove Lodge #1458 was in 1964. He returned to the position twice more in 1989 and 1991 and served in the same capacity at the North Shore Lodge in Port Washington in 2007 until his death. He was most proud of his position of District Deputy Grand Exalted ruler for Central Long Island. Glen Cove Lodge PER Joseph Sanchez had this to say. "Joe had a unique personality and a great smile that went along with his memorable stories. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends as well as his Elk family." In addition to the Elks Joe, a WWII Army combat veteran, also found time for membership in the American Legion and the V.F.W.

Mastroianni was employed by Hendrickson Bothers Construction Co. for 40 years. "One need not look far to find projects that changed the face of Long Island that Joe worked on. From the Captree Bridge, the Long Island Expressway, the 1964 Worlds Fair to the East Rockaway sewage treatment plant, pop had a hand in all of them" said son-in-law Bill.

Predeceased by his wife of over 50 years, Laura (Maccarone), Mastroianni is survived by his daughter Charlotte Martino and her husband Bill, son Anthony "Bud" and his wife Audrey, and grandchildren William Martino Jr., Lori James and Elena and Nicole Mastroianni.

The family requests that donations be made to the Elks National Foundation at http://www.elks.org/donate/default.cfm.
