The Glen Cove wrestling team finished the season in strong fashion. On Sunday, Feb. 17 the team went to Baldwin High School for the County Qualifying Tournament. Tom Marshall, Rahul Nath, Steven Suarez, Kevin Nicholas, Scott Michaleas, Harrison Balisky and Nate Booth all wrestled tough for the Big Red.
Danny Belfiore earned a first round win over the third-seeded wrestler from Baldwin. Danny eventually placed sixth. Ryan Pina picked up a pin as he took sixth place as well. Alexey Bogdanich picked up two pins and a win on his way to fifth place. Mike Marino picked up two pins as he placed fourth to earn a trip to his third county tournament. Pat Cook earned his first trip to the counties with his fourth-place finish. Hector Paez also took fourth for his second trip to the counties. Seniors Steven Paez and Edwin Franco earned third-place finishes for their second trip to the county tournament. Sophomore Sasha Bogdanich made his first trip to the counties, placing third as well. Mike Iannetta won a close 13-10 match over his opponent from Baldwin to get to the finals, where he lost to a tough Ryan Chimon from Syosset. Junior Kevin Gardrvits won two matches to get to the finals. In the finals, he defeated Anthony Cardenas of Long Beach for the qualifying tournament championship.
The Big Red sent eight wrestlers to the County Championship at Hofstra. The opening round saw the Big Red picking up pins as Pat Cook, Edwin Franco, Sasha Bogdanich and Steven Paez all pinned their way into the second round. Glen Cove had a tough second round, losing matches to some of the top-seeded wrestlers. As the tournament went on, only two Glen Cove wrestlers were still competing after the semifinals. Steven Paez lost a close two-point decision to Joe Giametta of Macarthur. Pat Cook defeated Mark Ortiz of Farmingdale 11-9. Pat made it to the last match to get crowned All-County. He was beaten by a rugged Rob Mancino of East Meadow.
The season was a big success for Glen Cove. With five returning county qualifiers and a strong JV and middle school group led by Coaches Kopecky, Rubin, Doerr and Bednarski the Big Red looks forward to another successful season next year. Congratulations to all team members.
The Glen Cove co-ed varsity winter track regular season came to an end recently with a number of student athletes racing their way to personal bests in competitive fields. A few shining star underclassmen paved the way for the future of this varsity squad. Runner Tom Manzione, a standout sophomore, dashed his way to take top honors as GC's most promising and competitive distance runner. He will take a short hiatus from the sport to play lacrosse, but look for him to run well with Coach Bullis this fall for the varsity cross-country team. In addition, break out eighth-grader Sabrina Miopoli, who has competed on the varsity level since the seventh grade, created a stir by qualifying for the Nassau County Championship meet. Her ninth-place finish in the 1000m solidifies her position as best female runner for years to come. She will continue her pursuits with the varsity women's spring track team.
Sadly, the Big Red running program will lose two unbelievable competitors this year. Distance All-Star Loreley Gomez and Multi-County Champion and perennial State Championship Competitor Danielle Silas are graduating this spring. Coach Carbone and Coach Hugelmeyer would like to thank these ladies and all other graduating senior student athletes for making Glen Cove's running program a competitive and exciting one to coach.
