The 81st anniversary New York Daily News Golden Gloves Boxing competition will be held in the Glen Cove High School gymnasium on Wednesday, Feb. 27, beginning at 7:30 p.m. At least 10 bouts will be held in the open and novice divisions of this historic tournament. Winners of these bouts advance to further rounds and hopefully to the finals, which will be held at Madison Square Garden on April 17-18.

The event is sponsored by the Glen Cove Boxing Club and the City of Glen Cove Department of Parks and Recreation. The doors open at 7 p.m.; boxing begins at 8. Tickets are $20 each and are available during regular business hours in the Glen Cove Parks and Recreation Department, third floor, City Hall, as well as at the door the night of the show at the high school.

First held in 1927, the New York Daily News Golden Gloves is the oldest and largest amateur boxing tournament in the country and has helped launch the careers of more than 30 world champions. Proceeds from the this event will fund a scholarship to be presented to a graduating Glen Cove High School student in May, which will also be sponsored by the Glen Cove Anglers Club. Other proceeds from this event will go towards a major fundraising event in conjunction with the City of Glen Cove in an effort to build a new facility, which will house the Glen Cove Boxing Club, as well as the Glen Cove Hall of Fame and community meeting space.
