Charles Donohue

Charles "Charlie" Donohue, of Sea Cliff, died on Feb. 17, 2008 at the age of 93. He was born in New York City, the son Anna Matilda, a Swedish immigrant who came to New York through Ellis Island. She founded a successful family marrying Charles Donohue, Sr., who originally worked for the Gas Mobile Car Company of New Jersey. He raced in the Vanderbilt Cup Races on Long Island with Chevrolet and then founded Donohue's Service Station in Murray Hill, Flushing.

Charlie was in the first graduating class of St. Andrews in Flushing. During WWII he worked for Grumman doing final assembly of the Corsair and was a volunteer firefighter in Bethpage. He continued to own and operate Donohue's Service Station until his retirement in 1987. He was the past president of Long Island Gasoline Dealers Retail Association for many years and was an active member of Kiwanis as well as a Cub Scout leader in Sea Cliff in the late '60s and early '70s. He was an avid golfer and after his retirement he worked at the Glen Cove Golf Club.

He was a loving and devoted husband and father. He was a well respected member of the community; his family dubbed him "The Mayor" as wherever we went, even on family trips, he would always come across someone he knew, always a smile, always a handshake. He will be greatly missed and is survived by his wife Billie, son Charles (Buzz), daughters Scottie, Jeanne and Beth and granddaughter Grace (Pete) Lutz and great- grandchildren Hannah and Will. Visiting Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Whitting Funeral Home, 300 Glen Cove Ave., Glen Head. Funeral service Thursday evening at the funeral home. Interment private.
