On Wednesday Jan. 9, the varsity women's bowling team defeated Oyster Bay High School. Kristin Zaleskie paced the team with a high game of 184 on the way to a 426 series; both are personal bests. Megan Silka had a high game of 166 in the last game, which was also a personal best. Skyler Cullum, Brittany Cullum and Jannina Rojas also bowled well for the varsity squad. On Thursday, Jan. 10, the team's opponent was Sewanhaka District. The Sewanhaka women bowled three very strong games. Even though the North Shore varsity women bowled well, they came up short, losing to this strong team. Seniors Skyler Cullum, Jannina Rojas and Kristin Zaleskie, junior Brittany Cullum and sophomore Megan Silka all bowled for the varsity squad. At the start of the week, the North Shore men's bowling team found itself in second place in Conference 2 and, just as importantly, holding the 16th and final spot to qualify for the Nassau County Team Championship. The Vikings' first match of the week was against Oyster Bay. North Shore took all three games led by outstanding bowling from Steve "I'm Back" Cottell and Taylor "I Never Left" Ross. The second match of the week against first-place Sewanhaka was much more significant. North Shore had come up short in the last four meetings with Sewanhaka dating back to last season. This week that streak would end. North Shore came out smoking, posting an 868 team score in the first game, beating Sewanhaka by more than 200 pins. The second two games were very tight with North Shore winning one out of two to win the match and move very close to the Conference 2 lead. DJ More and Kohe Brooks-Burke helped lead the Vikings to this crucial win. One more solid week could mean a conference title and playoff berth for the Vikings. The North Shore women's varsity basketball team had a tough week with two conference losses. In the first game, North Shore found themselves down early to a much taller New Hyde Park team. The offense had a difficult time getting into a flow, only scoring 21 points in the first three quarters. Spurred on by a full-court press in the fourth quarter, however, the Lady Vikings made a game of it, but still fell short, losing 47-37. Up next was a road loss to the Green Dragons of Westbury. The Lady Vikings played tough, and behind Kristen Reynolds' 26 points and Kristin McCormack's 18 points managed to stay in it until the end, finally succumbing 63-56. The final game of the week was a conference game with Valley Stream South. The Lady Vikings' offense and defense were both clicking in this game as they raced to a 19-5 first quarter lead. Maggie Drowica paced the offense with eight points in the first half en route to a 34-13 halftime lead. Kristen Reynolds led all scorers with 19 points as North Shore won 56-37. The end of tough week finds the Vikings 3-2 in conference play in a four-way tie for first place. Come on down and support the girls in the final weeks of the season.
