Frank Osborn Braynard, a long time resident of Sea Cliff, creator of Operation Sail, died of pneumonia on Dec. 10, 2007. He was the author of 40 books and an artist who produced many sketch books and portfolios. His work in life was all related to maritime pursuits in writing and lecturing on maritime history.
He was a ship news reporter for the New York Herald Tribune, did public relations for the American Merchant Marine Institute and the Moran Towing Company. In 1962, Braynard and others on the committee met with President Kennedy who gave his enthusiastic support for a parade of Tall Ships in 1964. The Operation Sail of 1976, in celebration of America's Bicentennial had a "vast and positive impact on his country," a Newsday editorial noted in 1976. He co-founded the South Street Seaport Museum and served as curator of the US Merchant Marine Museum at Kings Point. Americas' Sail, where ships from the Americas have participated in sailing events together, was started by Braynard as well as the popular Around Long Island Regatta.
He attended Friends Academy in Locust Valley and Glen Cove High School. He graduated from Duke University in 1938 and received a master's degree in history from Columbia. Braynard served as a trustee of the Village of Sea Cliff and was one of the founders of the Sea Cliff Art Show. He was on the Scholarship Committee, was a Cub Scout leader, a member of the Sea Cliff United Methodist Church and many other village committees.
Survivors include his wife Doris (Shelland) of 58 years; a son David of Sea Cliff; daughter Noelle Holland (Jonathan) of Manhattan; two granddaughters, Isabelle and Marguerite Hollander; a sister Nancy Wait (Harold) of Cranford, NJ. He was predeceased by a brother Edwin and sister Margaret Peabody.
There will be a memorial service on Jan. 12 at 11 a.m. at the Sea Cliff Methodist Church, Carpenter and Downing Aves. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Seamans Church Institute, Manhattan.
Veronica Salvey, of Glen Cove, died on Dec. 16, 2007. Wife of the late John E. Mother of John C. (Sylvia), Ronnie (Roger) Thyben, Susan Mistretta, Jean (Angelo) Ciampi, Charlotte Ricco and Dennis (Cindy). Grandmother of nine. Great-grandmother of seven. Arrangements were made by the McLaughlin Kramer Megiel Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Funeral Mass at the Church of St. Patrick Thursday at 10 a.m. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery.
