The 2007-2008 bowling season looks to be a promising one for the North Shore Vikings. The team is already 3-0 after opening the season with victories over Locust Valley, Mineola, and Carle Place. The members of this year's men's bowling team are Kohe Brooks-Burke, Brian Broker, Trevor Cannella, Steve Cottell, Vin Denovellis, John Guerci, Troy Kreiner, DJ More, Jake Natuzzi, Taylor Ross, Austin Simpson and Kenny Zukas. The team will look to keep up its winning ways, with two upcoming matches against a tough Sewanaka team.
The season may be over but the awards keep on coming. On Tuesday Dec. 4, the Nassau County Soccer Coaches Association held its annual awards ceremony at the Long Island Marriott in Uniondale. Five North Shore players received post-season honors for their excellence during the season. Brandon Robilotti, Zachary Venditto, and Keith Salerno received All-Conference Awards. Robbie Grabher who led the team in scoring for the second year in a row received his second All-County Honorable Mention Award. Tucker Morgan whose fine play in goal helped to propel the Vikings to a playoff spot for the first time in many years received his second All-County Award. In addition, the team received the Sportsmanship Award for Conference IV. In the last two years the North Shore program has improved and succeeded in great part due to the dedication and excellence of these players and both they and their parents are to be congratulated on a job well-done.
Congratulations to the North Shore Women's Varsity Basketball team on winning the prestigious 24th Annual Barbara Hoffman Manhasset Booster Club Tournament. In the first round, the Lady Vikings were opposed by a very tough Westbury squad. The Vikings, led by Kristen Reynolds (31 points, 4 assists and 3 steals), raced out to an early 14-9 first quarter lead and never looked back en route to a 56-48 win. Led by Ashley Janelli, Devon Comito, Kaela McGilloway, Alexa Kianofsky, Justyne Passarelli and Maggie Drowica the Vikings kept the much taller Green Dragons off the glass and did not give up any second-chance points.
In the final, the Lady Vikings faced off with a powerhouse squad from New Rochelle. Once again the offense was clicking early and often, as both teams seemed more than willing to the run the fast break in the first quarter. The Vikings, led by Lauren Berglin's six first-quarter points, raced to a 17-16 first quarter lead. In the second quarter, North Shore stepped up its team defense, as it outscored New Rochelle 14-5 giving them a 31-21 halftime lead. The defense continued to keep the pressure on and the offense led by tournament MVP Kristen Reynolds (24 points, 4 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks), senior Lauren Berglin's career-high 15 points and 11 rebounds and All-Tournament selection Kristin McCormack (18 points, 6 assists, 5 steals and 15 rebounds in the tournament) scored 17 points in the third quarter for a 48-32 lead. Final score was a 60-53 win. The Vikings' next home game is Tuesday, Dec. 18 at 4:45 against Lynbrook. Come on down and cheer them on.
