Last week, the Pony Red team won its first round playoff game against the previously undefeated North Babylon team but Glen Cove's season came to an end on Sunday against the undefeated Roosevelt team in the NFC championship game.
The Pony Red team took the initial kickoff and drove all the way down to the Roosevelt 3-yard line. Unfortunately for Glen Cove, a very uncommon penalty (pushing the pile) was called against them and they were placed back at the 8-yard line with a loss of down. The Pony Red then took to the air and Roosevelt intercepted a Glen Cove pass in their end zone and ran it back 100 yards for a score of their own. Instead of Glen Cove holding a 6-0 lead, they found themselves in a 6-0 hole. Roosevelt then scored another TD with 1:40 seconds left in the half when their QB was able to break containment and threw a perfect pass to their back who eluded numerous tackles to make it 45 yards into the end zone. With the score 12-0 in the fourth quarter, Glen Cove turned the ball over deep in their territory resulting in a short Roosevelt drive for another TD making the score 19-0. Glen Cove's offense answered back with a long drive resulting in a Billy Flahive rushing TD, closing the lead to 19-6. The Roosevelt offense finished the tired Red team off with another TD late in the quarter. The Glen Cove offense started to drive again but a fumble sealed the win for Roosevelt.
Although the boys fell one game short of the Super Bowl, they had a very successful season. Coach John Nagle would like to thank team mom Helena Flahive for everything she did for the team, and assistant coaches Dwyane Garner, Bill Peet and Cory Land, for their time and dedication to the team.
The team would also like to congratulate Midget Red on a great win in the Super Bowl!
