Opinion

This year the Deasy Elementary School PTA was able, due to the generosity of the families and staff of the school, to provide a Thanksgiving dinner complete with turkey or ham to 57 deserving families. We are so proud of this accomplishment. The families who benefited from the efforts were very grateful for this assistance during this time of the year.

The children were able to watch the food donations grow as the items were sorted and stored on the stage. Our principal, Mr. Julio Delgado, was a great motivator to encourage all students to participate. He ran contests and made the children a real part of the drive. The baskets were delivered by our teachers who volunteered their time to be able to make the gift a personal one.

As of our delivery date, more than 1,125 non-perishable items and 19 turkeys and hams were donated by the families and friends of Deasy School. As a wonderful addition to the holiday dinner, Joy Sullivan and Angela Zupa, teachers at our school, donated 46 pies to be placed in the baskets. We are very grateful for the outpouring of support from local organizations also. In particular, we would like to thank the Glen Cove Rotary for a donation which purchased 26 turkeys for our families, The Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Resurrection Philoptochos for adopting 10 of our families and Mayor Suozzi's office, which adopted two families.
