On Saturday the Pony Red Team traveled to North Babylon for the first round NFC playoff game against the undefeated North Babylon White team. North Babylon won the toss and tested the Glen Cove defense with its potent running game. The defense was up to the task when defensive end Brandon Villa hit the Babylon QB on fourth down, causing an incomplete pass.
The Glen Cove offense on their first play from scrimmage saw Tiquan Garner break a 40-yard TD run around left end. The second quarter saw the Glen Cove offense strike again when QB James Catanzano passed to fullback Tony Palmieri who laterally passed to halfback Tiquan Garner who, behind great blocks from Will Kassar and Tony Palmieri, took it in from 53 yards out. Tiquan wasn't quite finished yet and scored on an 80-yard TD run before the half ended, making the halftime score 18-0.
The third quarter saw the Glen Cove offense drive down to the Babylon 30-yard line before fumbling the ball. North Babylon mounted a long drive which ended with a TD, cutting the lead to 18-6. The Glen Cove offense then mounted a drive of its own which culminated with a great 8-yard TD run by Tiquan Garner, making the score 25-6. In the fourth quarter North Babylon scored another rushing TD, but Glen Cove mounted another offensive drive which ended when James Catanzano scored from two yards out.
The defense held North Babylon scoreless for the rest of the game and Glen Cove won by a score of 31-13. Great games were turned in by Tiquan Garner (4TDs) Brandon Villa (2 sacks) Tony Palmieri, James Catanzano, Tyrone Davis and Will Kassar. With the win, the Pony Red team advances to the NFC championship game.
The Pony White team traveled to West Babylon on Sunday afternoon to face the top-seeded and undefeated Eagles in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs. The game started out on a good note as LB Traishawn Hubbard recovered a fumble on the first play of the game. Glen Cove was unable to benefit from the turnover, but it did give them a good look at the Eagle's three stars. West Babylon scored first on a long run but Glen Cove denied the extra point. The Cardinals moved the ball 55 yards downfield on the second drive of the game with seven carries by RB Ryan Perkins and a TE pass to Matt Borer who dove into the end zone to put GC on the board. Perkins tacked on the extra point and GC took the lead 7-6.
On the ensuing kickoff, safety Michael Burrell was the only thing standing between West Babylon and the end zone and he paid for it. Burrell planted his feet to make the tackle but was lifted into the air and flung to the ground by an Eagles lead blocker. Burrell lay motionless on the field as West Babylon celebrated another TD. Burrell would be OK but was too shaken up to return to the game. The Cardinals were in serious trouble at the safety and tight end positions with Burrell out of the game. He was a big part of the reason the Cardinals were playing in Division 1 of the playoffs to begin with.
But the team dug deep and denied the extra point on the next play. They took that momentum into the next drive which started on their own 40-yard line. Perkins had his number called again and again and with a shoestring catch by Borer the Cardinals were in business on the 20. QB Josh Schwartz called his own number and picked up another first down and it was 1st and goal from the 10. RB Traishawn Hubbard found the end zone through a gaping hole compliments of linemen Daniel Rosero, Tajah Garner, Aidan Lynch and Joshua Figueroa, and lead blocker Joey Kiaer. Perkins again took charge of the extra point and Glen Cove took the lead 14-12. That would be the last time the Cardinals would lead in the game. The offensive power and speed of the West Babylon running backs would take its toll on the GC defense. Despite scoring two more TDs courtesy of Hubbard and Perkins, and recovering two on sides kicks, along with a 2-point conversion by kicker Max McCrindle, the Pony White team ended its season with a 44-24 loss. A big thank you goes to all the fans for coming to the games to cheer the boys on, and to the coaches for taking the time to teach the game of football. The Pony White team would like to offer its best wishes and support to the Pony Red and Midget Red teams as they continue on in the Division 1 playoffs. Go Cardinals!
