The North Shore varsity volleyball team finished off its regular season with a win at home vs. Oyster Bay thanks in part to strong play by Allison O'Connell (16 kills, 4 blocks) and Danielle Dweck (20 assists). As the game progressed the team came together to win on Senior Night. Strong play by Kiki Palazzo and Kristin McCormack rounded out a well put together victory. Cassandra Knox's return from injury was an emotional lift that the team very much needed.
North Shore finished the season strong and earned a playoff berth and a #4 seed. The game was last Thursday at home vs. 5th seeded Mineola. The team started off strong right from the beginning. Excellent serving by Danielle Dweck (7 aces) and Kristin McCormack (5 aces) really paced the victory for North Shore. Allison O'Connell kept up her dominance in the middle with 10 kills and 8 blocks, virtually shutting down Mineola's offense. Great defense was displayed by Kiki Palazzo, and with each pass the offense was able to run successfully. The winning effort was completed by strong play from Biff Tierney (5 kills, 3 blocks), Kelly Small (4 kills, 4 aces), Cassandra Knox, Dominique Corozzo and Lauren Pearsall played excellent defense to keep the game moving. Coaches and spectators alike saw the team play at its full potential; they really played perfectly.
With the win the team moved on to the county semifinals vs. #1 seed Seaford. The match took place last Saturday evening. Although the team was truly coming together, and put forth a great effort, Seaford proved to be too tough and the Vikings lost in three games.
Coach Frank Mauro said, "I want to take the opportunity to express my gratitude and thanks to the parents of the volleyball girls as well as the faculty members and administrators who supported and attended the games this season. It is a great feeling to look into the crowd and see the support; the girls appreciate it as well. I wish the seniors, Allison O'Connell, Danielle Dweck, Kiki Palazzo, Kristin McCormack and Cassandra Knox the best. You all have truly made my first season as varsity coach a great one. Thank you for all your efforts! I wish you all the best in your future endeavors."
