The Big Red girls volleyball team went 2-1 this week, starting with a win over Roosevelt. The girl's played great and won in easy fashion beating the Roughriders in three games, 25-14, 25-12, 25-4. Dianna Manarino had 12 service points to start the third. Glen Cove improved its record to 10-3 with that victory.

On Tuesday the team faced a tough opponent in Carey, which had beaten them once already this year. Glen Cove lost in three games, 25-13, 25-20, 29-27.

On Friday the team took on an undefeated Lawrence team, which had already beaten them once this year. Glen Cove was determined to take down Lawrence and came out fired up. The team was led by captain and senior Carolena Brasiello who recorded 14 kills, helping Glen Cove take down the powerhouse Lawrence. Dianna Manarino and Sofia Christopolous played a great back row allowing setters Mikeala Olson, Aja Alter and Sonia Canalas set the ball up. Glen Cove had some heavy hits from the arms of Carolena, Victoria Garcia and Devon Testa. Kelsea Valance also had a great day serving and playing the back row. Go Big Red.

The Glen Cove boys and girls cross-country teams have evolved into two very strong running teams. This is Coach Bullis' second season as the coach of these teams, and he is pleased to announce that the team has 16 dedicated runners, which is triple the amount of runners that they had last season. Setting goals and working toward those goals is the motto of the cross-country team.

The team does various different workouts. Some days they run to Locust Valley or Bayville, while other days they stay in Glen Cove. One day a week they spend their entire practice on the track doing speed work. This consists of running many consecutive sprints. Another one of the team's favorite days is when they set out to do hill repeats. This is a 4- to 5-mile run, but what makes it special is that whenever they get to a hill, they run to the top, turn around, and then jog to the bottom. This is repeated four times before they continue to the next hill, only to do the same thing again. The great thing about running in this area is that there are many hills for the team to enjoy. The team also runs to one of the local beaches, run some sprints on the sand, and cool off in the surf before heading back to school.

All of the teams' hard work is paying off, and it has shown at their past meets. Their defeats against Sewanhaka and New Hyde Park set a record for Glen Cove. This was the first time that both teams placed first in a race on the same day. The boy's team set a record low of 20 points for the race; the lower the score the better. The score is determined by the finish of the top five runners for each team. Dominick Brasiello finished first, Raphael Perelstein second, Jason Ho fourth, Gian Villalta sixth and Stephen Suozzi seventh. The girl's team also had an all-time low 30 points. Loreley Gomez finished first, Sabrina Minopoli third, Danielle Carlson seventh, Melissa Minopoli eighth and Candra McCoy 11th.

Coach Bullis said, "It has been a very rewarding to work with this fine group of dedicated runners. As the coach of this team, I enjoy seeing the dedication and the commitment that each athlete exhibits each day. I am looking forward to seeing the team continue to grow and improve."
