Opinion

On Monday, Oct. 15, the air around the Glen Cove Golf Course reverberated with the sounds of happy golfers doing what they are pleased to do - play the game they love for a cause they cherish. It was the October Golf Classic for the benefit of the Glen Cove Senior Center and it seemed as if half the residents of Glen Cove and environs contributed to making the day very special.

Although this as the fourth golf tournament providing funds for the center, it was the first one to be sponsored by the SAGE Foundation. The foundation, founded by the late Mayor "Jimmy" Suozzi, has recently been reorganized and is now busy doing what it has been set up to do - help to augment the programs and services of our excellent senior center through fundraising events, individual contributions, grants and endowments.

The SAGE Foundation joined a multitude of generous sponsors, contributors and volunteers, who showered the players with gifts, food and general good will. The center's indomitable director, Carol Waldman, her dedicated staff, the golf committee, ably led by Pat Parmelee and Linda Thomson, the numerous senior volunteers with some of their junior helpers were in evidence everywhere.

Special thanks are due to Howard Robertson and the Glen Cove Golf Course staff; to Peter Morris of Culinary Management, who provided the continental breakfast; and to the Soundview Restaurant for the box lunch and delicious buffet dinner. MC Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling, brought his own brand of comic comments to a "silent" auction, which was anything but silent as the dinner guests reacted to his zany good humor and the many prizes donated by generous local merchants.

It's not too late to be part of this effort. You can help our senior center prosper by sending a tax-deductible check to the Glen Cove SAGE Foundation at 130 Glen Street, Glen Cove, NY 11542.
