Wearing helmets and armor, the Big Red set out to slay dragons at its Homecoming game on Saturday, Oct. 13, and the team dominated the encounter, scoring early and often to defeat the Westbury High School Green Dragons 40-12. Kaliym Beatty rushed for two TDs. His second, a 44-yarder, was through a huge hole created by Rich McGrady, Tim Maher and Jesse Martino. Anthony Collins also ran for two scores, while Andrew Brown kept his consecutive TD streak alive by scoring a rushing TD in all five games played. QB Bresky had another solid day rushing for 47 yards, passing for 48, and running back an interception 44 yards. Rounding out the backfield and Glen Cove's balanced attack were fullbacks Maher and Doug Tripp, who pounded out an additional 52 yards.

Another offensive star was wing back Passalacqua who had a nifty run for 15 yards setting up Brown's TD. He also scored on a nice 20-yard pass and catch to close the first half at 27-0. At game's end, Westbury's head coach paid a fine compliment to the big Big Red offensive line, citing their mobility and execution as "playoff caliber." Alfaro, Palmisano, Belfiore, Linares and company are very proud of this compliment, as all coaches know games are won and lost in the trenches.

The defense again played on fire, hotter than dragon's breath. In the first half the Green Dragons were held to one first down and only 15 yards out of 13 attempts. Multiple tackles for losses were recorded by Dan Mahoney, Doug Tripp, Collins and Dean Montesantos. Big plays by George Metskas (fumble recovery) and Joe Fiorino ( interception) helped extinguish the Green Dragon offensive. As always, Brendan Huggins, # 66, was at free safety, doing whatever it took to help the team.

Next week the 3-2 Big Red face a talented 4-1 Sewanhaka High School squad in Floral Park. The game has playoff implications for both teams and fan support for the Big Red is greatly encouraged.

Currently, the Glen Cove boys soccer team stands undefeated at 4-0, displaying great talent, team work and sportsmanship in all its games. The boys plan to continue their winning ways, consistent with the amount of work put in during practices. The team will continue working together toward a great season and knows that even if the team doesn't win all its games, at the end, the players are all winners if we play as a team.

The Glen Cove girl's volleyball team won its ninth game of the season vs. Manhasset last week. It was an important game because the teams were tied for second place in their division. In the tough battle, Glen Cove managed a five-game victory 25-21, 25-23, 25-22, 25-21 and 25-22.

The team is led by senior captains Carolina Brasiello, Devon Testa, Aja Alter, and Mickeala Olson. The other seniors on the team are Shawnee Song and Cynthia Villa who have been contributing to the team for many years.

Sofia Christopoulos and Victoria Garcia have been a part of the varsity program for the last three years. They have been a big part of the team's success, helping Glen Cove to its seventh straight winning season. Kelsea Valance, Sonia Canalas, Lauren Budzenski and Dianna Manarino are also juniors on the team.

Coach Carbone recognized something special in sophomore Ashley Lightbourne when he asked her to be a part of the varsity team. She is on her way to becoming a phenomenal player and coach looks forward to coaching her through the next three years.

The team has a tough week coming up in which they are playing two of the teams that had previously beat them. If the girls want to make the playoffs, they need to win these important games. Come support the girls this Friday against an undefeated Lawrence team.
