This past weekend North Shore's own Shelby Talcott participated in the Nassau County Individual Tennis Tournament. Shelby had a very successful tournament, reaching the quarterfinals and earning All-County honors. Shelby is the first All-County female tennis athlete in seven years.
The team continues to improve. This past week, the most exciting match was against Locust Valley. With the team down 3-1 in matches, seniors Kristen Reynolds (second singles), Amanda Horowitz/Ariel Felix (first doubles), and Jaclyn Batel/ CeCe Bowe (junior) all came from behind, losing the first set in each of their matches only to win in three sets. The team match came down to the doubles team of Horowitz and Felix. Down 2-4 in the third set, they pulled out an impressive 7-5 third set victory. The team's record stands at 3-8 with matches against Manhasset, Great Neck North and Great Neck South to close out the season.
For the second week in a row, the Vikings varsity football team lost a heartbreaker, 12-7, to the Falcons of Valley Stream South. After falling behind 12-0 in the first half, the Vikings battled back and dominated the second half, but came up just short. The Vikings touchdown came when quarterback Bobby Magnuson connected with Michael Lennon. Taylor McGrath kicked the extra point. Taylor also rushed for 82 hard-fought yards on 13 carries. Keith Lopez had a key interception to keep the Vikings in the game. The Vikings offense finished the game with 126 yards in the air and the defense, led by Louis Mastellone (nine tackles) and Matt Meade (six tackles), kept the Falcons to under 55 yards in the second half.
The North Shore field hockey team is 5-3-1 midway through the season with wins against Floral Park, Baldwin, East Meadow, Clarke and Cold Spring Harbor. Solid in goal for the Vikings has been Regan Falk, with an average of six saves per game. In front of Regan are Ashley Janelli, Megan Scott and Lauren Koslow. These three defenders have outlined the base of a strong defense. Carrying the midfield are Kaela McGilloway, Liz Cottell and Melissa Meehan. With their combined speed and stickwork, they have been a tremendous asset to the team. The forward line of Elle Hoffman, Jennifer DiLeo, Sara Micelotta and Kathleen Lennon has persisted in the circle to finish the ball for North Shore. Sophomore Elle Hoffman and senior Liz Cottell lead the team in goals with four each.
