Well known businessman and entrepreneur Nicholas J. Breglio, of Glen Head, age 85, founder of Breglio School Supplies, one of the largest independent school supply businesses in the country, passed away peacefully on Oct. 12, 2007 after a brief illness. Born on New York's Lower East Side in 1922, Mr. Breglio's life was very much one of inspiration, and an indication of all that is possible through hard work, dedication and perseverance.

Mr. Breglio was well known to educators throughout the region for the business he founded in his basement in 1962. From these modest beginnings, the business flourished and soon moved to a retail location in Rosedale, and then to its well known location on Springfield Boulevard in Queens Village, where it became a favorite of teachers everywhere.

Business success is of course a great achievement under any circumstances, but what made this remarkable was Mr. Breglio's ability to overcome the obstacle of having never had the opportunity to complete high school. At age 16, he was forced to leave school in order to care for his ailing father and provide for his family. Despite the lack of formal education, he was able to create and implement a business model using floor marketing techniques and other systems that would set the standards for an industry.

Mr. Breglio's life was hardly all about his work. A dedicated family man, his home was a constant open door and surrounded by family. He took great pride in many of life's simple pleasures, but as usual, his natural talents and creative mind made things, such as a garden, become beautiful works of art with ponds and waterfalls, complete with outdoor trains to bring smiles to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

With great sadness Mr. Breglio mourned the loss of his daughter, Barbara Giovinco, on Aug. 27, 2007. Mr. Breglio is survived by his wife of 56 years, Josephine, affectionately known to all as "Jo"; his two daughters, Cathy Malvino (Robert) and Elaine Hallett (William). Brother of Marie Maietta, Anna D'Argenio and the late Cetta Valentino. Grandfather of Richard, Gregory, Douglas, Cristina, Nicole, Jaqueline, Heather and William. Great-grandfather of Brianna, Brooke and Robert. His legacy of kindness, fairness, and generosity lives on in each of them.

Arrangements were made by the Funeral Home of Dodge-Thomas, Glen Cove. Mass at St. Patrick's RC Church. Interment Locust Valley Cemetery. Donations may be made to Dominican Sisters of Amityville, 555 Albany Ave. Amityville, NY 11701.
