Lifetime Glen Cove resident Sidney Canarick, DDS, died on Oct. 6 at the age of 90, having lived a long and full life.

Dr. Canarick was born in 1916, attended Glen Cove Schools and is an alumnus of Glen Cove High School, Class of 1935. In addition to serving as president of his senior class, Dr. Canarick established himself as one of the school's most outstanding athletes. During his four-year career, he became the first ever four-letterman in the history of the school, participating in football, basketball, baseball and track. As captain of both the football and basketball teams, he was voted All-Scholastic for the 1934-35 football season after leading all scorers in Nassau County in both touchdowns and field goals.
Dr. Canarick went on to attend Bucknell University on a football scholarship, graduating in 1939. He had the prestigious honor of being the winning quarterback in the first Orange Bowl game in 1935, leading Bucknell to a 26-0 victory over University of Miami.
He then attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry, graduating in 1942 before serving in the Pacific as a lieutenant commander for the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Dr. Canarick returned to Glen Cove in 1946 and married Jean Cone while setting up his dental practice, from which he retired in 1995, having served as the Glen Cove School District's dentist until his retirement. The Canaricks raised their three children, Debra, Susan and Paul in Glen Cove.
Dr. Canarick was active in many local civic organizations, including the American Legion, the Glen Cove Elks Lodge No. 1458, the Glen Cove Lions Club, the Glen Cove Masons Lodge, VFW James E. Donohue Post and Congregation Tifereth Israel. Dr. Canarick also served as a Hall of Fame committee member for more than 20 years and was a charter and life member of the Matinecock Rod and Gun Club. He was also a member of the board of directors of the First National Bank of Long Island.
Dr. Canarick was inducted into the Glen Cove Hall of Fame with the inaugural class of inductees in 1984 and was honored as the Hall of Fame's Man of the Year in 2000.
The Glen Cove Hall of Fame committee has voted to honor "Doc" Canarick's memory with a scholarship in his name, which will be awarded to a student-athlete at Glen Cove High School each June, along with the John Maccarone Memorial Scholarships that are awarded annually.
