Opening day was a great day for the North Shore football program. The JV set the tone in the morning with a 12-8 victory over Cold Spring Harbor. The varsity followed with an impressive 38-20 win over Cold Spring Harbor. Junior and quarterback Bobby Magnuson was 6-for-12 passing for a total of 184 yards in the air. He completed three touchdown passes and had two interceptions on defense. Two of the three touchdown passes were to senior Mike Lennon who had two touchdowns and 143 yards receiving. Senior and tight end Ian Hnatov had the other touchdown when he dove to catch Magnuson's pass. Senior running back Taylor McGrath had 12 carries for 84 yards and two rushing touchdowns. The Vikings finished the day with 318 yards of total offense. The Vikings' next game is Sunday, Sept. 22, at Roosevelt High School. Kickoff is 2 p.m. Week two of the Vikings soccer season was shortened not only by the holidays, but by the rain as well. In the only game played, North Shore bested MacArthur by a score of 3-0. Robbie Grabher, Andrew Lazarow, and Charlie Vasiento supplied the offense while Tucker Morgan posted his second shutout in as many games. Newcomer Chris Dellavecchia had an outstanding performance in midfield showing both good attacking skills and superior defensive ability. The shutout was secured by the strong sweeping ability of Zach Venditto and the remaining core of the backfield consisting of Matt Kelly, Brandon Robilotti and Frank Galluzzo. North Shore moves to 2-0 on the season and opens league play on Monday, Sept. 17 against Sewanhaka High School.

The women's cross-country team started off with its best team performance in school history. After coming off a county championship from a year ago, the team has only gotten stronger with the addition of new talent and hard workers. The first competition was held at legendary Van Cortland Park in the Bronx this past weekend, where races have been run for generations.

Starting where she left off was sophomore Brianna Welch, who placed first out of approximately150 runners. Nice performances were also run by junior Kasia Staniaszek, junior Marisa Dussel, sophomores Charlotte Manogue, and Claire Simmons, and senior Elissa Lechtenstein, who took more than two minutes from her previous best.

However, the story of the day was the newcomers of the team. Freshmen Danielle Muoio, Emily Osman, junior Thea Lange, and sophomore Heather Magnuson ran exceptionally well, solidifying themselves as athletes to watch this upcoming season. These four are going to help make this team, which is already a good one, into perhaps a great one.

Overall the team placed fourth out of the 27-team field, defeating the #1 ranked team in all of Nassau County (Massapequa) from the 2006 season, and only falling short behind the #2 ranked team in the state of New Jersey and the Class "C" State champions from New York. Not a bad start!
