The Glen Cove Cardinals continued their winning ways by defeating a strong New Hyde Park Cyclones team 4-3 in nine innings for the 14U Mayors Trophy Championship. The Cardinals went undefeated through the tournament with pitchers Stef Schwartz, Zach Arthus, Milo Duchnowski and Pete Cappiello collecting wins along the way. The Cardinals were led offensively by John Bellock, James Cohan, Mike Iannetta and Nick and Ryan Kennedy throughout the tournament and the defense of Tom Montefusco, Phil Rizzo, Ryan Hopke, Pat Toher and Haydon Taylor kept the opposition off the board to give Glen Cove a berth in the championship game. The championship was a classic nine-inning battle featuring solid pitching and standout defensive plays. Glen Cove took the lead 1-0 on sac fly by Pete Cappiello to score James Cohan in the bottom of the first. That lead held until the top of the fourth when NHP scored two runs on three hits including a homerun. They extended the lead to 3-1 in the top of the sixth but the Cards came back to tie it at 3-3 in the bottom of the inning as Cohan singled, Montefusco walked and John Bellock made it 3-2 on a long sac fly. A miscue by the NHP first baseman scored Montefusco from third and the game was tied. Cardinal ace Stef Schwartz pitched another gem and handed the ball to Pete Cappiello who held the Cyclones in check until the Cards won it in the bottom of the ninth on a bases-loaded walk to Schwartz. Pete Cappiello was named Championship Game MVP.
As the season winds down, the Cardinal staff of Tom Hopke, Phil Rizzo, John Cohan and Pete Cappiello would like to thank Glen Cove Jr. Baseball & Softball and all the parents for their continued support this season.
