The Glen Cove Cardinals 14U returned from their NABF Championship in Ohio to take on two powerful opponents in their bid for the LI Connie Mack Sandy Koufax Division Championship. The Cards took on the LI Sound in the semifinals and came out on top, winning the first game 13-3 with home runs by Mike Iannetta and Pat Toher before losing game 2 by a score of 7-4 despite a 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs effort by Tom Montefusco and two doubles by James Cohan. That set up the rubber match at Eisenhower Park.
The game was a well-played battle with the Sound scoring a run in the top of the first inning to put the Cards in a temporary hole, but the Glen Cove team responded as it has done all season by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead they would never relinquish. The Sound got it to 4-2 before the Cards added two runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal it with a 6-2 final and send themselves off to play a powerful LI Owls team in the championship round. Pete Cappiello and James Cohan notched victories for the Cards in the series.
The Owls and the Cardinals each had only one regular season loss and that was to each other as they split a June doubleheader at the Owls Park. The finals were everything they were expected to be. Game one was a pitchers' duel with Stef Schwartz taking the hill for the Cardinals. Through five innings the score was 1-0 Owls with each team turning back scoring bids with solid defense. The Owls then scored a run on a double with a man at second base to take the lead, 2-0. The Cards scored in the bottom of the seventh on a leadoff triple by John Bellock and a single by Haydon Taylor but couldn't get Taylor in to extend the game and the Cards found themselves down one game to none in the best of three series. Game two was back at the Campy Field at City Stadium and once again the Cards found themselves behind 2-0 after the top of the first inning. The score held at 2-0 until the bottom of the fourth when a triple by Mike Iannetta and a fielder's choice put Nick Kennedy up and his single put the Cards on the board in the middle of a 3-run inning. The Cards added one run in the sixth to claim the victory at 4-2 as Pete Cappiello pitched a complete game, a four-hit gem to set up the championship game. The Cards came out and played some small ball with Ryan Kennedy, Schwartz and Ryan Hopke contributing hits after falling behind 1-0 in the second inning, and scored four runs to take control of the game and go on to an 8-1 victory and the Koufax Championship. Seven Cardinals hit safely in the game with Ryan Kennedy leading the way going 3 for 3. The story of the game however, was the four-hitter by pitcher Milo Duchnowski as the only run scored by the Owls was unearned. The key to the Cardinals' success this season has been the defense with Phil Rizzo at second base and hard-hitting John Bellock at third base leading the way. The relief corps of Haydon Taylor and Zach Arthus contributed valuable innings all season in this championship effort.
