In late May, Glen Cove's own soccer player Marcello Zuccaro traveled with his dad to Palermo, Italy. This was no ordinary vacation, as Marcello was headed to Sicily for a tryout on a U16/17 youth soccer team, part of the Palermo professional soccer organization, playing in Italy's first division. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the 16-year-old Glen Cove High School student.
During his four grueling days of trials, Marcello impressed the coaches with his soccer physique and first touch on the ball. He also showed his grinta, which is Italian for toughness. On the last day, the directors of the club informed Marcello and his dad that Marcello had indeed made the squad and should report in late August for pre-season camp.
Marcello plays club soccer for the Hempstead Red Devils and has also been a starter on the Glen Cove High School Big Red varsity soccer team. He as been a Red Devil since the team's inception in 2000 and was fortunate to have played two years from his own age. This played a big role in the advancement of his soccer skills, as well as his maturity. In 13 seasons and more than 250 games with the team, Marcello has helped make the Red Devils into one of the top U19 teams in New York.
Marcello has dedicated himself to one sport and one team and that has helped him stay focused and healthy, both physically and mentally. Coach Mike Ferricchio, the Red Devils, the Big Red and the community of Glen Cove are bursting with pride and all wish Marcello arrivederci e buona fortuna.
