On Tuesday, August 7, Grenville Baker Boys & Girls Club will host its 37th Annual "Pidge" Martin Golf Tournament. This year's event promises to be a memorable one, as it will be held at the Meadow Brook Country Club in Jericho, which is one of Long Island's most coveted courses to play.
The golf tournament is named after one of the club's original founders, Milward W. "Pidge" Martin, who was encouraged by Walter Mack, the man responsible for making Pepsi-Cola a household name, to start a Boys & Girls Club in the area. Soon after Martin organized a club, Edith Kane Baker and her husband, the late George F. Baker, made a financial gift that enabled a clubhouse to be built in memory of their son, Grenville. The clubhouse, erected in 1950, was known as Grenville Baker Boys Club and, in 1980, merged with the Locust Valley Girls Club to form the club as it exists today.
Since its inception in 1970, the annual golf tournament has been a popular event, enabling participants to raise vital funds for the club's year-round programming while enjoying a challenging day out on the greens. Golf registration is $3,000 for a foursome, which covers green fees, brunch, cocktail reception and dinner. Play is open to both men and women golfers. Non-players are welcome to join the festivities for cocktail hour and dinner for $100 per person. The evening will also include an exciting live and silent auction.
