Larry Fischer

Occupation:

Certified Public Accountant

Qualifications:

I have been analyzing and auditing not-for-profit organizations for over 30 years; was partner in a nationwide accounting firm and a regional accounting firm; currently in practice for myself, experienced with unions, pension funds and health funds.

School/Community Service:

Coached girls softball and was a founding member of the Glen Cove Police Boxing Club. Currently treasurer of the Glen Cove Education Foundation and vice president of the Coalition for Glen Cove.

Personal:

Bachelor of Science, major in Accounting, Brooklyn College, 1971. Glen Cove resident for over 29 years. My wife, Leonora (Seid) and daughter Lauren are graduates of the Glen Cove school system and both successful lawyers.

Statement of Purpose:

I am proud to live in Glen Cove and I believe that although this community has a lot to offer, unfortunately, the reputation of the school system has cast a shadow that is detrimentally affecting all residents. Young families with school age children or planning to have children are leaving town or considering private school as the only choice for good education. Our property values suffer when our public education system is considered less desirable. It is imperative that we take decisive action to raise the quality and effectiveness of our schools and change public perception of how committed Glen Cove is to education.

I have the ability and insight to analyze and review budgets to make certain that our limited resources are used in the best ways. My goal is for the children and taxpayers of Glen Cove to receive the best education and value for their taxes, while teachers maintain a proper standard of living. I hope to be more hands-on and in touch with the community and its needs.

Community participation and responsibility are necessary to ensure that families enjoy the highest quality living environment. The education programs and resources that Glen Cove offers to residents are of paramount concern and relevance.

Ann-Marie (Sasson) Gailius

Occupation:

School/Community Service:

Involved with organizations such as Girl Scouts, environmental groups, programs run by the City of Glen Cove, Beautification and Clean Up America. Have chaired high school garage sale, plant sales and senior fashion shows. Am currently high school representative for District PTA Council.

Personal:

Native of Glen Cove and a product of the Glen Cove school. Awarded my high school diploma from LI Lutheran High School in Brookville. Majored in banking at Hofstra University. Married to Michael for 22 years; have two children who have attended the Glen Cove schools. Kevin, 20, is a member of the Class of 2004 and Samantha, 18, will graduate in 2007.

Statement of Purpose:

My commitment to the students and well-being of this district has been a priority for over a decade. It is time to take my experience to another level and continue the progress that has been made by working to address the future needs of our children and city.

The experience I have accumulated by participating in site-based committees, hiring committees, BIONIC (Believe It or Not I Care) week, and co-chairing our district's Drug Free committee, which opened the door to several successful community programs for our youth, as well as numerous fundraising events I have chaired over the years, has prepared me to understand the dynamics of various areas of education while also demonstrating my commitment to involvement.

With the challenges of overburdening of taxes, we need to remember that it is important to support those who work diligently to keep our costs and spending down, and that those individuals need to be commended for their ability to keep the budget cost-effective without affecting the educational needs of the students.

Ida (Costantino) McQuair

Occupation:

Private mathematics tutor

Qualifications:

Prior to turning to a career in education, for eight years I worked as an auditor for Deloitte and Touche, interacting with management and examining the books and records of both public and not-for-profit institutions. I also worked as a leave replacement teacher for eighth-grade mathematics at the Glen Cove Middle School in 2006. Currently, I tutor privately for Regents and non-Regents mathematics for all grade levels.

School/Community Service:

I am a member of the Deasy School PTA and a member of the Elija Foundation (Empowering Long Islands Journey through Autism), whose mission is to be on the forefront of effective and intense interventions relating to the range of challenges associated with Autistic Spectrum Disorders.

Personal:

I received my BBA in Accounting from Hofstra University School of Business and a Masters of Science in Education (Mathematics grades 7 - 12) from Long Island University, C.W. Post Campus. Attended Glen Cove Deasy School and Middle School and graduated from Glen Cove High School in 1990. Married to Charles G. McQuair, Esq. and we have two children. Charles, 6, is a first grade student at Deasy School and Vincent, 3, attends CTI Nursery School in Glen Cove.

Statement of Purpose:

Having a foot in both business and academia, I am steadfast in my belief that the children of Glen Cove should receive the best education and extracurricular programs possible while maintaining fiscal integrity. In order to accomplish this task, we need to garner the support of the entire community to achieve the educational goals we set for our children. As a concerned parent with children in the district, one at Deasy School and one shortly to follow, it is important that the parents of Glen Cove students have representation on the board. After all, if we invest properly in our children today, they will provide us with large dividends in the future.

Richard Tortorici

Occupation:

I am a retired school administrator. I have spent 32 years in education as a teacher, supervisor of special education, assistant principal and acting principal. Since retiring I have written five novels and ten short stories. My latest novel, Blood Relative, is currently on sale.

Qualifications:

This is my ninth year as a school board trustee. Five of them have been as board president. During this term we have brought the budget in under contingency levels for two years in a row; ended the practice of "special" meetings, thus allowing the community to speak at each meeting; provided much more information to the community in the form of annotated agendas and informational handouts. We have funded a very successful alternative school, begun the process of making much needed improvements to our buildings and grounds, and laid the foundation for student achievement.

School/Community Service:

Nine years as a school board trustee and president; two years as a member of the County Executive's School Task Force; member of the North Shore Coalition of School Board Presidents; member of the Mayor's City Task Force to develop a Master Plan; former vice president of the Glen Cove Youth Board; former referee and coach for CYO basketball.

Personal:

I have lived in Glen Cove for almost 35 years. Both of my daughters attended Glen Cove schools from kindergarten through 12th grade. My wife recently retired from Deasy School after 18 years as a Glen Cove teacher.

Statement of Purpose:

I support the efforts and direction the current superintendent of schools is taking our school district. His success is vital if we hope to improve the schools and protect our property values. If I am re-elected, I will continue with that focus. In addition to this, I would like to see a panel of community residents look into the need for a bond issue to make the needed major repairs on our buildings.
