  • News: See for Yourself What's Being Negotiated

    At the most recent Glen Cove Board of Education meeting, Glen Cove Teachers' Association (GCTA) President Karen Ferguson read a statement refuting the Glen Cove Board and Administration's assertion that they hold their teachers in the "highest regard and [value] excellent teaching" and that the GCTA is "fully committed to bargaining in good faith and would very much like to resolve all contract issues as it relates to a new contract." She stated that the GCTA has told the board that the association did not want to go into "full-blown negotiations" and asked that "we roll over the current contract with some minor revisions to satisfy both sides." A contentious and drawn-out process, she said, "saps energy that would be better used in passing our school budget and working to educate children." FULL STORY

  • News: Arts Program and LIPA Bring Applause from NS Board of Ed

    At its most recent meeting, the North Shore Board of Education was treated to a presentation by the district's arts department that was both entertaining and informative. "From K through 12, our young people are given many opportunities to explore, discover and learn who they are through art, music and theater," said Terryl Donovan, director of arts for North Shore.   • Sports: Wilmer Alfaro Plays Rough and Tumble Rugby

    Wilmer Alfaro, a junior at Glen Cove High School joined the Long Island Colts rugby club in 2004 and is quickly becoming one of the metropolitan New York high school competition's most consistent performers. Alfaro made a name for himself as a starting prop while still in middle school. Now a four-year starter, Alfaro is a very enthusiastic and busy forward. A big man, with great mobility, Alfaro likes to heavily involve himself around the ruck and mauls, while on defense he is a tenacious defender and tackler. With ball in hand, Alfaro runs it up straight and hard, and he is extremely dangerous when he is close to the opposition's try line. Alfaro also wrestles in the 270 lb. class and is a second year starter on the varsity football team at Glen Cove High School. FULL STORY
