  • News: Keeping Christ in Christmas

    The temperature was chilly with a spirit of warmth radiating from the crowd, the ritual solemn with a smattering of humor emanating from the clergy when Glen Covers gathered in Village Square for the second annual blessing of the crèche on Saturday, Dec. 9. More than 200 people were on hand, as Sgt. Jack McDougal presided over the event, speaking on behalf of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Mike Moran Div. 8, the Knights of Columbus James Norton Council and the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. The event was organized, according to Sgt. McDougal, because "with the commercialism that has become so much a part of the Christmas season, it was time to remember the true meaning of the holiday."   • Sports: Local Runners Score in Turkey Trot

    Among the award winners in the City of Long Beach 10K Turkey Trot were veteran athletes Dan Badalament and Mike Polansky. Dan, a longtime resident of Glen Cove who was inducted into the Glen Cove Hall of Fame a year ago, scored first in the 60-69 age group, and Mike, president of the Greater Long Island Running Club, scored in fourth place in the same group.   • Sports: Glen Cove High School Big Red Sports

    Holiday season is here, which could only mean one thing: roundball has returned and Big Red basketball is about to get underway. This year's boys basketball team is very young and inexperienced, with only five seniors on the squad, and Taleak Vasquez, an All Conference player from last year, and George Contantinou, the only starters returning from last year's team. Other seniors on this year's team are Alex Morra, who will help with the outside scoring, Enrol Brown, who will give rebounding strength to the team and Hanif Hashimi, who will be counted on as defensive stopper. Added rebounding and scoring strength will come from juniors Eddie Loeffler and Gil Colon and sophomore Kyle Hansen. Adding to the bench strength are newcomers Raul Vazquez, Isiah Jones and Stephen Suozzi. Rounding out this year's team are two sophomores, Eric Tripp and Michael Granados, who will be asked to step in and give stability and depth to the backcourt. FULL STORY
