As a resident of Glen Cove for 40 years we have watched the city go from a charming North Shore community to an aesthetic embarrassment.
There is no surer way to continue the Democratic administration's destruction of the suburban and bucolic nature of Glen Cove than to allow the waterfront development to continue as planned. The first changes that we saw in "urbanization" were the Brewster Street apartments, then the garages of Glen Cove that dominate our downtown area and, most recently, the Avalon Apartments, known euphemistically as the penitentiary at Glen Cove, which dominates the entrance to our city. Now, the potential of the most destructive of all, is the massive development of our waterfront.
We, the public, were never informed of this Long Island version of Co-Op City in the Bronx before all of the plans were in place. In fact, we were misinformed when we were told that the development would be parks, cafes and a few shops, similar to the town of Cold Spring Harbor. How did this change take place? How did the zoning change take place without a massive public approval? From whom did the developers acquire the land?
The impact on the public and on the environment has not been considered. Where are the children going to go to school? Will we have to build new schools at an increase in already destructive tax rate? What about fire and police protection and garbage collection, how much of an increase will be necessary? What about waste disposal and sewerage? What about the increase in taxes? There is the myth that an increase in the population will help to lower property tax. This is not true. Rather, taxes will increase due to the increased demand for schools and services. And, what impact will it have on the waterfront ecology?
It is, without a doubt, one of the most destructive projects we have had to endure so that a few people can get rich.
It must be stopped before it is too late!
