Mazie B. Loehner, formerly of Long Island, died on July 12, 2006. Mother of Joan Hauser and Virginia Smith. Also survived by her six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Rhoda Bermudez, of Uniondale, formerly of Glen Cove, died on July 13, 2006 at age 71. Wife of Mario. Mother of Mario, Carmen, Louis, and Camillo. Sister of Rosina, Conrad, and Georgina. Grandmother of 14. Great-grandmother of three. Visitation and service held at Dodge-Thomas, Glen Cove. Interment Pinelawn Memorial Park.
Walter H. Bliss, 89, died peacefully on July 16, 2006, at Westminster-Canterbury in Lynchburg, VA. Walter was born with his twin sister, Janet, in Brooklyn on Feb. 21, 1917, to James and Ethel Bliss. After growing up on Long Island and graduating from Sea Cliff High School, he soon married Eleanor Buchtenkirch. He became an insurance agent for Equitable and Kemper, among others, and established his own home agency in Locust Valley. He was active in the Sea Cliff Gospel Chapel for many years and enjoyed music immensely. In younger years, he was an excellent violinist and later became a tenor soloist. He and his wife retired to Portland, ME, in 1980 and spent summers on their beloved Moose Pond in Bridgton, ME, for over 25 years.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Eleanor; a daughter, Helen (Harlow Sternberg) of Maine; two sons, James Bliss (Valerie) and Walter Bliss (Kelly), all of New Hampshire; eight grandchildren, and two great- grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Westminster-Canterbury Chapel on July 19 with Pastor John T. Mabray of Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church officiating. A reception followed the service.
