A disappointing week with losses to Seaford and Glen Cove was highlighted by a 9-5 win over Carle Place. What made this win special was that pitcher Lauren Silka, making her first varsity start, went the distance and earned her first career win. Kelly Henry led the offense against the Frogs, going 3-4, with five RBIs and a powerful three-run homer that broke open a close game.

The Vikings bounced back with three wins this week over Plainedge (6-4), West Hempstead (5-0), and Clarke (10-5). Against Plainedge, Meg Schenkel came back from an injury to get the win. She was also 2-2 with a double and two walks. Kelly Henry continued her hot hitting with a 3-4 day and Lauren Berglin was 2-2 with a double and three RBIs.

Schenkel was one out away from a no hitter the next day against West Hempstead when she gave up the only hit of the day. She struck out eight and walked two in her second straight complete game victory. Kiki Palazzo, Kaitlyn Silka and Lauren Berglin all had two hits in the win.

On Thursday, North Shore overcame sloppy defense to beat Clarke 10-5. After the Rams had battled back to take a 4-3 lead, the Vikings scored five times in the fourth and held on for the win. Amanda Magnuson (3-3, two doubles) and Lauren Berglin (2-4, two RBIs) led the high-powered offense while Palazzo, Liz Cottell, and Lauren Silka all added two hits. Schenkel did not allow an earned run in picking up her 12th win of the year. North Shore is now 13-4 overall and 7-2 in league play. The last home game is May 15 against Bethpage and the playoffs start May 17 at 4:30 p.m.

With a week to go, the North Shore varsity tennis team stands 6-4 and in a battle with Oyster Bay and Locust Valley for third place in Conference III. Recently, the Vikings put together a three-match win streak against Locust Valley, Sewanhaka and Clarke. Stellar play has come from first singles, Eli Berger, who came from a set down to defeat Jenson Adoni of Locust Valley to clinch the team victory 4-3 and senior Chris Didamo, who continues to grind out victories with effort and determination. Didamo's matches are always the longest! But the real key to the team's success has been the doubles. Alex Bouganim, Amir Noor, Pat Bauer, Cole Korponay, Dave Edesary, Kenny Mandel, Keith Salerno, Ryden Rizzo, Jordan Ziskin and Joey Sacco have all contributed in doubles action. Each player has stepped in when needed and given his best effort on the court. Their aggressive play at net has impacted the matches positively.

The North Shore women's track and field team had a stellar week as the weather cooperated and the girls rose to the occasion. The last quad meet of the season occurred earlier in the week, as the team ran, jumped, hurdled and threw to victory, ending the regular season with a 9-4 record. Top-flight performances included junior Leslie Galati who threw 28', a personal best, and earned first place for that accomplishment. Freshmen Marisa Dussel and Kasha Staniaszek ran 1-2 in the 1500m and gained valuable points for the squad. The sprint squad had another fine day led by the dominant three of senior Allyson Gordon, sophomore Christie Goodman, and freshman Nora Gaughn. Other first place performances included sophomore Debbie Gilbert in the hurdles and eighth-grader Brianna Welch in the 3000m, and sophomore Jessica Fortunato in the high jump.

The second meet was no letdown, but showed even better performances. The team competed in the second annual Cold Spring Harbor Invitational. The day led off with a bang as sophomore Debbie Gilbert ran to victory and set a meet record in the process in the 400 hurdles running 69.2. Sophomores Taylor Shea and Eva Schlomann, ran impressively in the 100 hurdles both setting big personal bests. Eighth-grader Brianna Welch ran the third fastest time in NY State history for an eighth-grader running, 4:37.1 for the 1500m. The relays also had great performances as the 4x100 relay consisting of Gordon, Goodman, Gaughn and Schlomann placed fifth and medaled in the process. The 4x800 relay ended the meet just the way it started - awesome. Gilbert, Welch, Dussel, and freshman Thea Lange ran the fastest time for North Shore in quite some time. On a side note, Thea Lange had a 10-second improvement in her leg of the race which is quite amazing in an 800m race.

The next competition will be the third annual North Shore Invitational on Saturday May 13 at the high school at 10 a.m

After enduring a five game losing streak, the boy's lacrosse team picked up two wins this week. On Wednesday, the team defeated Wheatley 14-2 and followed that with its third overtime win of the season against Malverne on Saturday night.

Joe Valasiadis and Ron Irving scored four goals apiece to lead the charge against Wheatley. Rob Grabher added two goals while Joe Nakashian, Taylor McGrath, Chris Palliser and Nick Pappas had one apiece.

The team's triple overtime win versus Malverne made it two league wins this week for the Vikings. After trailing by five goals in the third quarter, the offense rattled off four consecutive goals to trail by one heading into the fourth quarter. Ron Irving's goal with 10:13 left finally tied the score at 7-7. The defense, led by Matt Meade, Rob Post, Chris Palliser and goalie Pete Treiber, would not surrender another goal for the rest of the contest.

In the third overtime period, Joe Nakashian picked up a loose ball and fired it into the net for the game winner, and his fourth of the night. Irving had two goals and two assists, while Valasiadis and Palliser had one apiece. The team's league record is 4-4, and they are 6-8 overall.
