NS Budget/Bond Proposal: Yes and No Difference Down to a Dollar
On May 16, the North Shore Board of Education is presenting the community with its budget and bond proposal. According to the board, this budget, which limits the increase in spending to 6.5 percent over last year, will also save district residents between $30 -$40 million dollars in long-term taxes and result in a 5 percent decrease in the school property tax rate paid by district homeowners for the 2006-07 fiscal year, based upon the most current information made available by New York State and Nassau County. This proposal includes the use of all state and federal aid to decrease the burden on local taxpayers and is a result of careful planning and what New York State Comptroller Alan Hevesi called "solid financial control and strong fiscal oversight" after a state audit of the school district this past fall.

Glen Cove High School Big Red Sports
Oh, what a night it was when the Glen Cove girls varsity softball team played a night game against Hicksville High School on April 11 and won 8-0. Prior to the start of the game, Coaches Johanson and McDonough made a special presentation honoring the late Thomas Renison. The softball program wanted to honor Thomas Rension, a father, friend and supporter of the Glen Cove community, schools and the softball program. The money raised that night from the 50/50 raffle and from the concession stand will go towards a scholarship in Thomas Renison's name for a graduating senior member of the varsity softball team. The Big Red girls varsity softball team and coaches thank everyone for their support.

On a beautiful spring day, the Vikings girls track and field team traveled to Massapequa to compete in the Nassau Coaches Track and Field Invitational. Overall the team had their best results of the season as many of them established personal best performances. Eighth-grader Brianna Welch took the lead midway through her race and cruised to victory in the 800m, running the fastest time in New York State so far this season. Freshmen Marisa Dussell and Thea Lange and junior Amanda Schefer all ran their best races of the season, and have shown great improvement of late. In sprinting, many girls have finally broken the 70-second barrier-and then some. Top performers were senior Allyson Gordon, junior Angela Shih, sophomores Jessica Fortunato, Eva Schlomann and Christie Goodman and freshman Nora Gaughn. It was a great job by all!
