While faugh an ballagh is usually the battle cry of the Fighting 69th Regiment, Glen Cove made sure to "clear the way" for the soldiers to lead the St. Patrick's Day Parade on Sunday, March 19 as this year's Grand Marshals.

The Tara Pipe and Drum Band: Erin Go Bragh!

Capt. Sean Michael Flynn wore the sash and Glen Cove's own Alfred T. Baker, AOH Division 8, served as Aide to the Grand Marshal.

As always, the parade included pipe and drum bands, Scouts, political dignitaries, dancers (Irish and more), vets, Hibernians, Irish wolfhounds, motorcycles, police, fire and EMS companies, seniors, kids, cruisers, large parade balloons and emcee John Canning, to name just a host.

Crowds lined the sidewalks wearin' the green, waving Irish and American flags and holding signs that read "We Support Our Troops." Numerous shop windows also proclaimed the city's gratitude to our armed forces currently in harm's way around the world. Signs were as diverse as the community, ranging from professional pieces to the work of fourth-and-fifth grade students at Landing and Connolly Schools.

The Fighting 69th Regiment has earned more battle credits than any other in America. Its fierce reputation in battle was secured during the Civil War and the regiment has also fought in the war with Spain, World War I, World War II and now, Iraq. The Fighting 69th exhibits the confidence, strength of character and loyalty indicative of true American spirit. As stated in the citation from Mayor Ralph V. Suozzi, the regiment is "Gentle when stroked, fierce when provoked."

Al Baker and his wife Mary have been fixtures in Glen Cove since they moved here in 1957 and started their family. They have five children: Susan, Mary, Evelyn, Elizabeth and James. The Bakers are also blessed with 11 grandchildren ranging in age from 17 years old to 7 months. They constitute a parade all by themselves.

Al has always been very active in St. Patrick's parish. He was a CYO coach for more than 15 years. He and a fellow Hibernian founded the St. Patrick's Parish Building and Grounds Committee and were responsible for church renovations on two occasions, as well as for numerous other projects. Al is active with the Ancient Order of Hibernians, currently holding the position of secretary. As his citation stated, his life's work has always been dedicated to family, church and community - giving of his whole heart every step of the way. Knowing his generosity, one could be certain he would share the wishes bestowed in the Irish blessing delivered by Mayor Suozzi: "May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow, and may trouble avoid you wherever you go." 'Twas a grand day in Glen Cove.
