As the Glen Cove winter track team sprints into the post season, there is great promise for success at the county and state level. Through hard work and dedication, four student-athletes have qualified to represent Glen Cove at the Nassau County Championship at Suffolk Community College. Danielle Silas, Mazar Thomas, Jose Alfaro and Megan Avram are among the brightest and most gifted athletes of Big Red's growing track program.

Danielle Silas, a returning sophomore, won All-County honors last year, taking third place in the 55-meter hurdles. Looking to repeat, Danielle worked incredibly hard. Her dedication and work ethic propelled her into the most elite of competitors in the 5-meter hurdles. After breezing her way through the quarter- and semi-finals of the hurdles, Danielle pulled ahead of the competition and won the county championship. This is the first time in Coach Carbone and Coach Hugelmeyer's tenure that a Glen Cove athlete raced her way to county champion.

Mazar Thomas, a senior, is one of the most competitive long jumpers in Nassau County. Last year he leaped to All-County status, placing third at the county meet. Unfortunately, Mazar was forced to sit out for the first half of this season due to illness. Upon his return, he qualified for the county meet, but just missed a second All-County honor.

Jose Alfaro is a natural athlete. This junior received all-county honors as part of the Glen Cove varsity soccer team and, in his first year running, looks to achieve the same feat in winter track. Jose was the only Glen Cove athlete to qualify for the county championship for two different events - the 55-meter dash and the long jump. Only one tenth of a second away from making the finals in the 55-meter dash, Jose made the finals for the long jump and placed third to receive All-County recognition.

Megan Avram, who has been a shot putter for Glen Cove the last four years, finally made it to the county meet. Pitted against great competition from other schools, Megan threw her longest distance this season but was just short of making the finals. The coaches are very proud of her accomplishments and will miss her leadership in the field events.
