I think that Mayor Ralph Suozzi is justified in asking for a moratorium in Glen Cove to stop building for six months. The citizens of Glen Cove deserve this right. I am a lifelong citizen of Glen Cove and very proud of my town. This city has so much to offer. Here on Long Island, about one hour from Manhattan, we still have some open land, waterfront and beautiful parks. But in the past four or five years, I've been dismayed in the transformation of this town. It is very upsetting to see open land go to the wayside, subdivisions of properties put in place and buildings and storefronts approved without taking into consideration enough space for parking. In the past we have had moratoriums for certain areas of Glen Cove but once building resumes, it appears that no real assessment of the area was really done. It is a very wise decision to stop building for six months to conduct a complete assessment of all Glen Cove so that the town doesn't look like a complete piecemeal of development.
At the public hearing on Tuesday night, I couldn't help but feel that the mayor, city council members and the citizens of Glen Cove were being threatened by the big developers and their lawyers. They were throwing the phrase around that decisions were decided in "good faith" and that no developers would want to do business in Glen Cove if a moratorium was imposed. The government and the citizens need to take a step back and assess what we want for the future of our entire town which includes the waterfront. Once the development is completed we will have to live with it. Developers will come and go but it is we, the people of Glen Cove, who will have to live with its consequences every day.
