(Ed. Note: The following letter was written to the GCFD Chief David Spy and is printed here at the author's request.)

On Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005, you responded to a fire in my home at 14 Windward, Glen Cove. You were the first fireman on the scene and your calm professional manner reassured me immediately.

I have never had a home fire and was terrified when my gas-fed clothes dryer burst into flames. I called 911 and Chief Spy was on the scene in less than four minutes. His crew quickly followed. A Glen Cove policeman responded immediately also.

The fire crew checked my entire house, established fans to clear the black smoke, capped the gas line, moved the damaged dryer outside and stayed until they were satisfied that no fire was in the walls surrounding the site.

I was home alone when the fire occurred and will be forever grateful to Chief Spy and the Glen Cove firemen for their quick response and thorough work.

Again, Chief Spy, thank you!

Jane and John D'Augelli
