Long time Alaska resident David Ross Morrison passed away on Jan. 11, 2006 at his home in King Salmon, AK. Though born in Brooklyn in 1948, Dave grew up on the President Streets in Glen Cove and graduated from Glen Cove High School in 1966. Following graduation he joined the US Navy, served a tour in Vietnam with distinction, and was later stationed on Kodiak Island in Alaska as a weather observer. This began his 30+ year love of Alaska, its wildlife, and its wildness.
After his career in the Navy, Dave worked on the Alaska Pipeline, crewed on fishing boats, became an observer for the National Weather Service, and lived in places with names that invoke the wildlife and the rugged lifestyle that he embraced, places with names like Great Bear and King Salmon, AK. He soon became an avid outdoorsman, an expert hunter, trapper, fisherman, and guide, and captured the animals of the tundra in both photographs and video. From the cabin he built across the river in the town of King Salmon, he kept in touch with a good many friends and relatives in Alaska and throughout the Lower 48 through his monthly newsletter for over 20 years. His self-named "Wildman Chronicles" was really a journal of his life in the great outdoors. Known around King Salmon as "Big Dave" and to his newsletter readers as "The Wildman."
Dave was a loving father, son, brother, and friend, and will be forever loved and missed by many. Dave is survived by his father, John Morrison of Cape Canaveral, FL; his sister, Jeri Yarborough of Dallas, TX; daughters, Stephanie Rush and Jeryl (Alan) Asplund; and 5 grandchildren. A memorial service was held at the King Salmon Community Baptist Chapel in Alaska on Jan. 18 in celebration of "Big Dave's" life.
