The Glen Cove varsity football team defeated Carle Place HS 35-6 on Friday night at home. Due to the adverse situation the players of Glen Cove endured this season, parents raised money to bring in lights for the team's final home game. A perfect setting greeted the players, band, cheerleaders, kickline and fans as the weather was mild and the field and stands were illuminated by 12 portable light stands.

The Frogs of Carle Place played a tough first half, scoring late to trail at halftime 14-6. A determined Big Red squad turned the game around in the third quarter, scoring 21 points to secure the victory. The seniors playing in their last home game turned in stellar performances. Running back Anthony Bellock rushed for three touchdowns and threw for a fourth while rushing for 130 yards on only 11 carries. Bellock used the holes opened by his senior guards Matt Troffa and Mike Norman along with center Rod Catano, a job they have been doing all season in relative anonymity.

Senior Joe Heffernan had two TD receptions out of four catches for 63 yards. It would have been more but his exciting 47-yard catch and run was called back for a penalty. Senior end Kurt Cornelis and QB Corey Land also had big nights. Kurt had two key receptions for 51 yards while Corey threw for 114 yards and a TD pass. It was Corey's second consecutive game throwing for over 100 yards; last week Land threw for 233 yards and three TDs in a losing cause to Bethpage.

Defensively the seniors also rose to the occasion. Emmanuel Pagan, Zach Stern, Jon Hilton Jones and Andrew Melillo consistently stuffed the Carle Place running game. At linebacker, Captain Mike Maher and Thunder Back Brian Monahan and junior Mike McCrindle reunited to annoy the Frogs' blocking schemes and passing attack with their blitzes, fake and real.

The win was the fourth earned on the field (three are considered forfeited for using an ineligible player) making the Big Red 4-4 unofficially on the season. This week the Big Red travels to Eastport in Suffolk for its final game with hopes of a winning season. The game is a Nassau / Suffolk County crossover game as a part of the LI Challenge sponsored by Newsday.

Glen Cove's varsity girls volleyball team finished this season with a fantastic record of 12-2 which unfortunately placed the team second in its division and not eligible for a post-season berth.

The girls played their best volleyball against Carey, the division's only undefeated team. In a five game battle, GC stunned the powerhouse to knock them from post-season play. Exceptional performances came from freshman Victoria Garcia, who had a career-high 10 aces, four kills and six digs. Jamie Downer also contributed with six aces and eight kills to help GC maintain its winning streak at home.

Senior Elizabeth Ortega, in her final game, led the team to a triumphant win over Westbury to close out the season. Seniors Anna Sebastiano and Jamie Downer both contributed to the win as they finished their high school volleyball career.

Coach Carbone and Coach Hugelmeyer would like to thank the student-athletes and their parents for an exceptional and successful season. Special congratulations to the seniors, including injured player Tesheryl Wheeler, for great volleyball careers at Glen Cove.
