NS girls soccer team is still in the hunt for a playoff berth. Rain for seven days did not help in practices - even though the team practiced inside it was not the same. The team is now 4 wins and 6 losses, but still has four games to go -- a must win situation. Defense, led by Cassandra Leigh, Kerri Koczen, Lauren Portnoy, Devon Comito, Angela Shih and Joanna Sciarrino is playing very well with a "never say quit attitude" on the field. Ninth graders Laura Cvikevich, Erin Torratone and Madison Martinez are playing their hearts out - it bodes well for the team next year. Team members Allyson Gordon, Alex Welch, Danielle Wong, Laura Byer, Danielle Dilena, Lauren Silka and Kaitlyn Silka all embody the fighting spirit of the Vikings, game after game. In their last game, it was just bad luck that they did not come away with a win. Allyson, Laura Cvikevich, Alex, and Randi Zukas were attacking with shots from all over the field, but the Valley Stream North goalkeeper was very good. Meghan Schenkel, goalkeeper and one of the team captains, had to leave the game due to a slight injury. In all the games the team has played, Meghan has been outstanding in goal, diving right and left to make some great saves. Kaitlyn Silka came in for Meghan and did a very good job. Leading scorer and captain is Allyson Gordon with 17 goal and five assists, one hat trick and four goals in the Long Beach game. Coach Schultz is very proud of his team, which always play as if the game is never over until the final whistle. He wishes his team good luck in the remaining games!

The North Shore cheer team walked proudly at the annual Jones Beach Cancer Walk this past Sunday. Their dedication to helping others and willingness to support this great cause is to be admired. After walking five miles under blue skies and sunshine, the team headed back to North Shore to cheer on the NS football team as they played the Roosevelt Rough Riders. What a change from last week's soggy weather! NS cheerleaders are always there, rain or shine. Although the Vikings lost to Roosevelt, the

Cheerleaders could be seen with endless spirit and energy. Go get 'em next time, Vikings!

Team bios:

Dom Z. (senior) is one of three boys on the North Shore cheerleading team. In just a few short months he has improved immensely to be one of the teams "Motion Masters" as well as being selected as a UCA All-Star by the staff at the 2005 UCA Summer Camp. This year Dom is out to prove himself a real asset to the team, and hopes to bring his partner stunting to a more elite level. Dom is currently playing football for NS. While the cheer team misses him dearly, his efforts on the field are applauded with extra enthusiasm from the sidelines by his cheer teammates.

Ian L. (senior) is about to begin his second season as a North Shore cheerleader. As the tallest member of the team, he is out to help all his teammates reach new heights. After attending the 2005 UCA Summer Camp, Ian has discovered that "cheerleading is not just for girls" and he is looking forward to more partner stunting to finish out his senior year of high school. Ian has proven himself as an essential element to this team.

Siobhan B. (freshman) is not a newcomer to the sport of cheerleading. The summer before 7th grade, she was invited to attend the 2003 UCA Summer Camp with the North Shore cheerleaders. This year Siobhan is looking forward to learning more elite stunts as a flyer, as well as showing off her gymnastic skills. Her incredible heel stretch dazzles the crowd!

The girls cross-country team finally found some sunny weather as it traveled to Van Cortland Park in the Bronx. The team competed in the Eastern States Championship race against more than 200 schools. Freshman Marisa Dussel had the most improved performance of the day by running over a minute better than her previous personal best. It was a day of learning and understanding; for most of the team members it was their first competition on this high level. Earlier in the week, the team improved its record to 5-2 on the season with a win over CSH and Carle Place. It is the best record the girls cross-country team has had at North Shore in quite some time. Overall winner was eighth-grader Brianna Welch who cruised to victory, winning by 30 seconds. Other standouts were freshman Ilana Rotberg, and sophomore Morgan Smith, who both ran personal bests.
