The Big Red varsity defeated the Clarke HS Rams Saturday by a score of 27 to 14. The Rams jumped out to an early lead scoring on an 82-yard pass play to go up 7-0 before a 70-yard kick return made it 14-6. The Big Red did not panic and before the halftime whistle went off, they had a 21-14 lead. Joe
Heffernan scored on an 11-yard TD run , followed by Corey Land's 1-yard touchdown plunge. Anthony Bellock caught Land's 2-point conversion pass to tie the score at 14. The go ahead touchdown was scored on a 21-yard
TD pass to Heffernan from Land. Kurt Cornelis kicked his first extra point of the season making it 21-14.
Defensively the Big Red had a stellar day. Other than the 82-yard TD pass the Big Red "D" had their way with the Rams offense. Clarke rushed for a measly 19 yards on 14 carries recording positive yardage on only three plays. Forced to pass, the Rams threw two interceptions, one by Bellock who ran it back 36 yards and the other by Matt Rogers who ran it back 54 yards to conclude the game. The linebacking core of Fletcher, Maher and McCrindle combined to wrap up and frustrate the Rams backs and recievers all game long.
Offensively the Big Red controlled the ball, rushing 45 times behind the blocking of Sullivan, Norman, Catano, Aparicio, Troffa, Ortiz and Vasquez. Runningbacks Pagan, Bellock and Heffernan combined to rush for 251 yards while QB Land passed for an additional 90 yards.
The Big Red travels on Saturday to Plainedge HS in North Massapequa for a 2 p.m. game against the undefeated Red Devils. Spectator support is needed and encouraged for this important Conference 3 showdown, so come on out and root on the Big Red.
