Gold Coast Library Opens Its Doors; You Can Look It Up
The long-awaited Gold Coast Library, located at 50 Railroad Avenue in Glen Head, has opened its doors. A celebration on Saturday, July 30 marked the event, as the 55th member of the Nassau Library System officially commenced operation.
GC Hibernians Rally for Fighting Sixty-Ninth
The LAOH and AOH were able to collect, package and ship more than 80 care packages to soldiers deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Shortly after that the Hibernians were able to purchase over $2,000 worth of personal items including health items, snacks and most importantly, phone cards. These items were donated to New York's own "Fighting 69th" stationed in Iraq.
NS Student Earns Gold in World Maccabiah Games
Allyson Gordon, who will be a senior at North Shore High School this September, has returned home from three weeks in Israel where she captained the United States' Junior Girls Soccer team to a gold medal at the 17th World Maccabiah Games. There were more than 800 athletes in the US delegation, and over 8,000 athletes from around the world. The opening ceremonies took place at Ramat Gan Stadium in Tel Aviv on July 11 with 45,000 spectators in attendance.
Melillo Named to All-Island Baseball Team
Billy Melillo of North Shore High School was named for the second straight season to the prestigious All Long Island baseball team, the only repeating player from last year's team. This season he batted .512, had 30 RBIs, scored 34 runs, stole 34 bases in 34 attempts, scored 32 runs, hit six home runs, and had an incredible 41 walks. He posted an on-base percentage of .789 and a slugging percentage of 1.14 while playing first base. While pitching, Billy had a 7-2 won-loss record, struck out 74 batters in 54 innings, walked eight, and sported an 0.81 ERA. For his three-year varsity career he was 22-5 overall with an ERA of 0.91.
